Children's Perspective and Responses on Disasters

in DIYHublast year

I hoard old stuff if I know I can make use of them in the future. Like this six-year-old calendar with children's drawings on them.

Like my recycling calendar from more than a decade ago, I recycled another calendar but more than half younger this time from 2016. It was a compilation of drawings of grade school students that depict themes regarding disaster preparedness or responses. The drawings are amazing with powerful messages so I didn't want to put them to waste just because 2016 was over. I wanted to make the drawings as wall decors.

The calendar was flip-upward notebook style which the top side has the narrative of the drawing and the drawing itself beside the narrative. One month has one drawing so there are twelve wall decors to make.

Each drawing depicts a disaster, natural and man-made, and the steps or guidelines on how to avoid them. These were explained in the narratives.

At first I thought of getting only the drawing for the wall decor then I thought otherwise. It will be good to also show the narrative, the names of the students who made the artwork and schools where they came from. So I included those details.

This DIY project was supposed to be easy but I always had excuses. I give credit to the quarantines thar gave me time to do it. All I needed were recyclable cardboards, plastic cover, ordinary tape and double-sided tape.

I just pasted the poster on a cardboard, wrap it with plastic cover and it was done. Easy right? Even if there were twelve to make, it did not take me much time to finish them when I focused.

Framing the posters can cost a huge amount so DIY with cardboards was very budget-friendly. It was also convenient because I can just stick them on the wall using double-sided tape without drilling and ruining the wall.

The drawings were winning entries to a poster making contest in 2015. The contest host had the great idea of putting them on a calendar for the next year. Now I take pride of looking at them like precious arts on my walls, like gallery walls! 😄
