Iluminated manuscripts exhibition in Bologna – Mostra di codici miniati a Bologna

Good evening everyone and welcome back to my blog,

Last Sunday I discovered the ancient history of the city of Bologna. In particular, the municipality decided to open the doors to the archaeological museum on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of the University of Bologna (called Alma Mater Studiorum, founded in 1088!).

The archaeological museum houses a collection of illuminated manuscripts dating from the 13th to the 16th century.
First of all, we need to explain what it is, and it comes to us on wikipedia: “An illuminated manuscript is a manuscript whose text is completed by the addition of decorations, such as drop caps, borders and the insertion of figures”.

The activity of illustrating books was very important for the city of Bologna because there were numerous workshops of illuminating artisans.

This flourishing activity was connected on the one hand to the civil role and, on the other, to the religious role. In fact, for the society of the time it was important to immortalize on paper documents such as the statutes and identification numbers of corporations, but also sacred and choral books.
From Bologna the books containing the illuminated manuscripts were then spread throughout Europe!

The manuscripts I’m about to show you are very delicate and, for this very reason, they are not displayed all year round in the museum. The exposure is possible only with limited times and with limited lighting, in rotation.

I hope you enjoy this experience in the ancient history of Bologna!
Thanks for stopping by my blog.

See you next time,
Delilha

Delilha

Quite historical indeed. The fact that we can still see those existing today is amazing.

They are very well preserved, so interesting. Thanks for your comment :)

Wow how beautiful, true art.

I agree with you! So fascinating :)

Wow, I wish I could see them in person

They are very fascinating! There are a lot of details. Unfortunately they are not exposed all year round because they are delicate to light... Thanks for your comment <3
