Hello friends and welcome to this new adventure!
Today I bring you to discover a truly particular tradition of the island of Malta, in the Mediterranean.
The Maltese people are strongly linked to the island's glorious military past and in the capital, Valletta, it is possible to visit a very special attraction. I'm talking about the Saluting Battery: it's one of the oldest cannon batteries in the world still in operation!
The military battery is located near the city ramparts with a spectacular view of the natural harbor, called Grand Harbour. Behind it, there is the delightful Barakka Gardens public garden, where it is pleasant to take walks observing the local flora.
The Saluting Battery is put into operation every day at 12pm and 4pm and blank cannon shots are fired from the platform. It is a truly fascinating and original show and I thought I would share the video of the event with you.

Oggi vi porto a conoscere una tradizione davvero particolare dell’isola di Malta, nel Mediterraneo.
Il popolo maltese è fortemente legato al glorioso passato militare dell’isola e nella capitale, La Valletta, è possibile visitare un’attrazione del tutto speciale. Sto parlando della Saluting Battery: si tratta di una delle più antiche batterie di cannoni al mondo ancora in funzione!
La batteria militare è localizzata vicino ai bastioni della città con una vista a dir poco spettacolare sul porto naturale, chiamato Grand Harbour. Alle spalle si trova il delizioso giardino pubblico Barakka Gardens, dove è piacevole fare delle passeggiate osservando la flora locale.
La Saluting Battery viene messa in funzione ogni giorno alle ore 12 e alle ore 16 e dalla piattaforma sparano colpi di cannone a salve. È uno spettacolo davvero affascinante e originale e ho pensato di condividere con voi il video dell’evento.
The cannon battery dates back to the second half of the 16th century, where the Knights of the Order of St. John ruled in Malta. Its use has been, over the decades, ceremonial, defensive but also military during the Second World War. The most interesting curiosity is that the battery was also used to mark public time, when clocks did not exist, firing three shots at dawn, at midday and at sunset.
Tourists can visit the Saluting Battery every day for free and there is also a small museum with guns, miniature cannons and other military objects dating back 300 years. If you plan to visit the island of Malta, you cannot miss this jewel! Thanks for reading.

La batteria di cannoni risale alla seconda metà del ‘500, dove a Malta governavano i Cavalieri dell’ordine di San Giovanni. Il suo utilizzo è stato, nel corso dei decenni, cerimoniale, difensivo ma anche militare nel corso della Seconda guerra mondiale. La curiosità più interessante è che la batteria serviva anche per scandire il tempo pubblico, quando non esistevano gli orologi, sparando tre colpi all’alba, a mezzogiorno e al tramonto.
I turisti possono visitare la Saluting Battery tutti i giorni in modo gratuito ed è presente anche un piccolo museo con pistole, miniature di cannoni e altri oggetti militari risalenti a 300 anni fa.
