Ciao amici di Haive!Oggi voglio parlarvi di un artista norvegese, Tor-Arne Moen. Mi sono imbattuto per caso, attraverso You Tube, nel suo lavoro, e ne sono rimasto felicemente colpito tanto da credere utile parlarvene. Nato nel 1966, ha studiato all’Accademia nazionale di Bergen, è pittore, incisore e scrittore. Vive dove è nato, a Notodden, nella contea di Telemark con studio a HydroparKen.
Come dipinge lo si può vedere attraverso una serie di video da lui stesso realizzati e pubblicati sul canale You Tube. I filmati ci portano nel suo grande studio dove, di volta in volta, si alternano per essere ritratti, animali domestici, amici e bellissime modelle vestite con abiti di scena. Quello che non ha se lo va a prendere, armato di motosega, come gli alberi di betulle nel vicino bosco, e in barca nel vicino lago, armato di canna da pesca, coloratissimi pesci.
I video, estremamente curati e accompagnati da musica jazz, lui stesso suona il sassofono e all’occorrenza, sembra avere una band, ci introducono al suo modo di lavorare estremamente rigoroso. Inizia srotolando, sul pavimento, un grande rotolo di tela che ritaglia nella dimensione voluta e fissa, come un esperto tappezziere, su supporto ligneo. Su un cavalletto da muro che consente senza fatica di scorrere la tela in verticale e orizzontale, Tor-Arne Moen intraprende il suo viaggio compositivo. Preso tra le dita il carboncino da disegno, fissa la tela toccandosi ripetutamente il viso, tirandosi su i capelli e bevendo del buon vino. Si concentra nel mettere a fuoco l’idea iniziale che lo tormenterà, con ripetuti ripensamenti, fino alla fine del dipinto. Su un tavolo, a mo’ di tavolozza, spreme grandi tubetti di colore in generosa quantità per poi diluirli alla maniera dei maestri antichi, con una miscela di pittura ad olio e tempera all’olio d’uovo. Scegli accuratamente i pennelli a punta piatta, posati verticalmente su una originale rastrelliera, un mattone forato da costruzione.
I suoi soggetti, molto eterogenei, vengono dipinti con la stessa intensità e accuratezza: persone, motoseghe, grandi macchine americane, alberi di betulle, dispettose scimmie, leoni dalla posa regale, galline e cornacchie, ma anche, zebre e giraffe, carte da parati e grandi cornici dorate.
Riesce, con naturalezza ed estro, a portare sulla tela un leone e una donna che tiene nelle mani una cornice e un cerchio attraversati da fluttuanti trote volanti; da fotografie, tratte da un album di famiglia, ritrae immagini di uomini e donne di un tempo andato, di una remota giovinezza, restituite con la patina degli anni; un piccolo cane, un leone austero e una brillante donna con corpetto e reggicalze, guardano ammirati, nello stesso spazio, lo spettacolo di un cielo stellato. Pensa i suoi quadri come fossero delle serie, da scandagliare fino alla prossima e allora, ecco il ciclo del bosco di betulle, delle macchine d’epoca, dei bagnanti, degli sciatori, delle motoseghe, delle galline e altro ancora.
Tor-Arne Moen è senz’altro un genio della pittura, molto acuto e meticoloso nonchè ironico nell’accostare soggetti, i più svariati, nelle sue composizioni pittoriche. Le tele hanno una notevole stratificazione di colore, evidente frutto di ripensamenti per arrivare poi, per sottrazione o aggiunta, alla realizzazione finale. Usa colori brillanti pieni di luce che porta sulla tela con pennellate grasse, accostate l’una accanto all’altra non curandosi di omogenizzare la superfice, non c’è chiaroscuro, inteso in senso classico, ma colore su colore giustapposto. Il risultato finale è straordinario, la tela ha armonia compositiva ed è piena di vitalità. Tor-Arne Moen si colloca nel solco della tradizione figurativa, rinnovandola con sapiente maestria. Per il modo con cui aggiunge pennellate di colore sulla tela, ricorda tratti della pittura espressionista ma vi aggiunge in più l’ironia di un mondo fantastico.

His painting process can be seen through a series of videos he himself made and published on his YouTube channel. The videos take us into his large studio where, from time to time, pets, friends, and beautiful models dressed in stage costumes alternate to be portrayed. What he doesn't have, he goes to get, armed with a chainsaw, like the birch trees in the nearby forest, and in a boat on the nearby lake, armed with a fishing rod, colorful fish.
The videos, extremely well-crafted and accompanied by jazz music, he himself plays the saxophone and, if necessary, seems to have a band, introduce us to his extremely rigorous way of working. He starts by unrolling, on the floor, a large roll of canvas that he cuts to the desired size and fixes, like an expert upholsterer, on a wooden support. On a wall easel that allows the canvas to be easily moved vertically and horizontally, Tor-Arne Moen embarks on his compositional journey. Holding the charcoal pencil between his fingers, he fixes the canvas, repeatedly touching his face, pulling his hair up, and drinking good wine. He focuses on focusing on the initial idea that will torment him, with repeated reconsiderations, until the end of the painting. On a table, like a palette, he squeezes large tubes of color in generous quantities and then dilutes them in the manner of the ancient masters, with a mixture of oil paint and egg tempera. He carefully chooses flat-tipped brushes, vertically placed on an original rack, a construction perforated brick.
His subjects, very heterogeneous, are painted with the same intensity and accuracy: people, chainsaws, large American machines, birch trees, mischievous monkeys, lions in regal poses, chickens and crows, but also, zebras and giraffes, wallpapers and large golden frames.
With naturalness and whimsy, he manages to bring a lion and a woman holding frames and a circle crossed by floating trout onto the canvas; from photographs, taken from a family album, he portrays images of men and women from a bygone era, from a remote youth, returned with the patina of the years; a small dog, a stern lion, and a brilliant woman with a corset and garters, admire, in the same space, the spectacle of a starry sky. He thinks of his paintings as series, to be explored until the next one, so here is the cycle of the birch forest, vintage cars, bathers, skiers, chainsaws, chickens, and more.
Tor-Arne Moen is undoubtedly a genius of painting, very sharp and meticulous as well as ironic in juxtaposing subjects, the most varied, in his pictorial compositions. The canvases have a remarkable layering of color, evident fruit of reconsiderations to then, by subtraction or addition, arrive at the final realization. He uses bright colors full of light that he brings to the canvas with thick brushstrokes, placed side by side without worrying about homogenizing the surface, there is no chiaroscuro, understood in a classical sense, but color on color juxtaposed. The final result is extraordinary, the canvas has compositional harmony and is full of vitality. Tor-Arne Moen places himself in the tradition of figurative art, renewing it with skillful mastery. For the way he adds strokes of color to the canvas, he recalls aspects of expressionist painting but adds to it the irony of a fantastic world.
