Light Painting Photography On The Bridge

Last weekend there was finally another meeting with light painting friends. @lichtkunstfoto collected @stepko and me at the hotel in Berlin and we drove together to a disused bridge outside of Berlin. The weather wasn't consistent. Every now and then we had to interrupt our work and seek shelter in the car from the onset of rain. Despite the circumstances, we took a few pictures home with us. I would like to present them today.

Am letzten Wochenende gab es endlich wieder ein Treffen mit Light-Painting-Freunden. @lichtkunstfoto sammelte @stepko und mich am Hotel in Berlin ein und wir fuhren zusammen an eine verlassene Brücke ausserhalb von Berlin. Das Wetter war nicht beständig. Hin und wieder mussten wir unsere Arbeit unterbrechen und suchten im Auto vor dem einsetzenden Regen Schutz. Ein paar Bilder nahmen wir aber trotz der Umstände mit nach Hause. Diese möchte ich heute vorstellen.

I mounted my camera on my tripod with camera rotation tool (CRT). Sven had positioned his light rotation tool in front of it, equipped with a flashlight, attached rectangular light blade and color filter. A second tripod stood ready in front of the bridge.

The light figure was photographed first. To do this, the flashlight was switched on in strobe mode and rotated with the help of the tool. I switched on the camera with the lens covered and opened it for one rotation of the lamp. Then the lens was covered and the camera was rotated by 60° around the optical axis. I then uncovered the lens again for one rotation of the lamp. I repeated this until I had reached 300°.

The lens was then covered and the camera removed from this tripod and mounted on the previously aligned tripod in front of the bridge. Stepko positioned himself in the previously agreed pose. The lens was opened again and I scanned Stepko. I then illuminated the bridge and let the sensor collect some ambient light for another minute.
After more than 11 minutes, the picture was finally in the box.

Meine Kamera montierte ich auf mein Stativ mit Kamera-Rotationstool (CRT). Davor hatte Sven sein Licht-Rotationstool, ausgerüstet mit Taschenlampe, aufgesteckten rechteckigem Lightblade und Farbfilter, positioniert. Ein zweites Stativ stand vor der Brücke bereit. Zuerst wurde die Lichtfigur aufgenommen. Dafür wurde die Taschenlampe im Strobe-Mode eingeschaltet und mit Hilfe des Tools rotiert. Die Kamera schaltete ich mit abgedecktem Objektiv ein und öffnete es für eine Umdrehung der Lampe. Dann wurde das Objektiv zugedeckt und die Kamera um 60°, um die optische Achse gedreht. Danach deckte ich das Objektiv für eine Umdrehung der Lampe wieder auf. Das wiederholte ich, bis ich 300° erreicht habe. Danach wurde das Objektiv verdeckt und die Kamera von diesem Stativ entfernt und auf das zuvor ausgerichtete Stativ vor der Brücke montiert. Stepko brachte sich in der zuvor vereinbarten Pose in Stellung. Das Objektiv wurde wieder geöffnet und ich Scannte Stepko ein. Danach beleuchtete ich die Bücke und ließ den Sensor noch für eine Minute etwas Umgebungslicht einsammeln. Nach mehr als 11 Minuten war das Bild dann endlich im Kasten.

I had previously tried the same set with a rotation of the light figure in 120° steps. I also zoomed in a little closer on @stepko. The focal length in this step was 20mm. Otherwise everything went as described above.

Zuvor hatte ich das gleiche Set mit einer Rotation der Lichtfigur in 120°-Schritten ausprobiert. Ausserdem zoomte ich @stepko etwas näher heran. Die Brennweite in diesem Arbeitsschritt betrug 20mm. Sonst lief alles wie oben beschrieben ab.

Originally I wanted to photograph the model and create a kind of tunnel by zooming in on the bridge. However, I was not convinced by the test shot. I discarded the idea.

The picture below shows a test for lighting the scene. As you can see, I was a bit out of practice after a long period of outdoor light painting abstinence.

I didn't take any photos of the tools this time. To avoid too much luggage, we agreed beforehand and no tools were packed twice. For the first two pictures, I only used tools from @lichtkunstfoto. I would like to thank them once again for this. Also for the patience of @stepko, who had to stand still for quite a long time to take the pictures.

Ursprünglich wollte ich das Modell ablichten und durch Zoomen der Brücke eine Art Tunnel entstehen lassen. Der Test-Shot dafür überzeugte mich jedoch nicht. Ich verwarf die Idee.

Das Bild unten zeigt einen Test zur Ausleuchtung der Szene. Wie man sieht, war ich nach längerer Freiluft-Lightpainting-Abstinenz etwas aus der Übung.
Die Tools habe ich diesmal nicht abgelichtet. Um zu viel Gepäck zu vermeiden, haben wir uns vorher abgesprochen und es wurde kein Tool doppelt eingepackt. Für die ersten zwei Bilder kamen ausschließlich Tools von @lichtkunstfoto zu Einsatz. Dafür möchte ich mich noch einmal ausdrücklich bedanken. Auch für die Geduld von @stepko, der für die Aufnahmen ganz schön lange still stehen mußte.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
