Hola hibernautas! Estoy segura que todo el mundo se siente tremendamente orgulloso de la ciudad dónde nació. Yo he vivido toda mi vida en Ciego de Ávila. Pero ¿saben por qué es famosa mi ciudad?. Bueno, con los años la han llamado de muchas maneras. Pero hay un título innegable y que la distingue de cualquier otra ciudad de Cuba y es probable que del mundo, son SUS PORTALES.
Hello hibernauts! I'm sure everyone feels so proud of the city where you were born. I have lived all my life in Ciego de Avila.... But do you know what my city is famous for? Well, over the years it has been called many names. But there is a curious title that distinguishes it from any other cities in Cuba and probably the world: IT´S PORTALS.
Sí, como lo oyen. Ciego de Ávila es famosa por ser La Ciudad de Los Portales! Y no es un truco publicitario. No puede haber una casa en Ciego que en su diseño no tenga portal. Incluso, Las casas que están en la zona del casco histórico y que son las más antiguas de la ciudad, pueden ser renovados pero sin cambiar las fachadas; porque muchos de sus portales son comunes para bloques habitacionales enteros. Es decir, que es el mismo portal para una decena de casas, por lo que transformar alguno, sería dañar la estructura del vecino. Así de importante era para nuestros antecesores.
Yes, as you hear it. Ciego de Avila is famous for being The City of Portals! And is not just a publicity trick. There isn´t a house in Ciego that doesn´t have a portal in it´s design. Even the houses that are in the area of the historic center, which are the oldest in the city, can be renovated but without changing the facades. Due to many of their portals are common to entire residential blocks. That means, it is the same portal for a dozen houses, so transforming any of them, would damage the structure of the neighbor. That is how important it was for our predecessors.
Entonces si visitas Ciego, puedes caminar cuadras enteras sin mojarte cuando llueve o recorrer la ciudad sin coger Sol! ¿No es increíble?. Los portales son más que espacio de tránsito, en ellos se establecen pequeños comercios, los restaurantes pueden sacar sus ofertas a exteriores con toda comodidad, se hacen eventos culturales, bueno que hasta conciertos musicales y fiestas populares se han celebrado.
So, if you visit Ciego, you can walk entire blocks without getting wet when it rains or walk around the city without catching the sun! Isn't it amazing? The portals are more than wlaking spaces, in them you can find small businesses, restaurants offers in outdoors, cultural events, even musical concerts and festivals have been held.
Y si son viviendas privadas, durante las tardes y noches que ya la ciudad descansa, los ancianos principalmente, sacan sus sillones para descansar mirando a la calle y "coger un poco de aire al portal". No hay nada mejor para el estrés que sentarte un rato en el portal a ver a los conocidos pasar y chismear un rato. Es muy común escuchar "sácalo un rato al portal para que le de el fresco" cuando hay algún enfermo o "ponlo en el portal a que le de el Sol" cuando llegó un recién nacido y necesita un poco de luz indirecta.
And if they are private homes, during the afternoons and evenings when the city is resting, the elderly mainly, take out their armchairs to rest looking at the street and take a "breath of air". There is nothing better for stress than sitting for a while on the porch to watch people passing by and gossiping for a while. Algo tan sencillo como un pedacito de casa sin paredes, forma parte de mi identidad desde que nació la ciudad hace dos siglos. Me parece maravillosa esta tradición y de una humildad tremenda que se destine un espacio al traseunte cansado que va pasando. Y créanme, cuando he estado en otras ciudades de Cuba, extraño mis portales infinitos.

Something as simple as a little piece of house without walls has been part of my identity since the city was born two centuries ago. I find this tradition wonderful and of tremendous humility that a space is dedicated to a tired passerby. And trust me, when I have been in other cities in Cuba, I miss my infinite portals.
