As Mother's Day graces the calendar, I believe it's a perfect time to reminisce about the heartwarming story of a photoshoot that celebrated not just a birthday, but the enduring love and strength of a remarkable mother. Sometimes last year I was privileged to photograph my dear friend and her family as we orchestrated a birthday photoshoot for her beloved mother. Little did I know, it would unfold into a tale of love, resilience, and cherished memories.
My friend's name is OluYemi, we met during my NYSC program. (I explained the meaning of NYSC in my first post), after the program, we reconnected again in the city of Lagos. She bakes cake and she does it greatly. She also sells beachwear for men. She is doing great in her business and she inspires me a lot. We have been great friends.
When she reached out for her mother’s photoshoot last year, I was excited to be part of the plans. She has been willing to do this for her mother and that motivated me. She insisted I make her mother up and make her look more beautiful (I forgot to mention to you guys that there was a time in my life when I had to learn how to do Makeup).
On the day of the shoot, as I prepared the studio, I felt a sense of reverence. As the family arrived, I was struck by the grace and poise of the matriarch, her presence commanding admiration and respect. But amidst her elegance, I glimpsed traces of resilience, the quiet strength that had sustained her family through trials and tribulations. I had the privilege of adorning her with makeup and styling her hair before the session.
As the session commenced, the studio came alive with laughter and joy. Each frame captured not just smiles, but the essence of a bond that transcended time and space. I photographed her personally also with her daughters. I witnessed moments of tenderness and affection, a testament to the profound connection between a mother and her daughters.
In between poses and wardrobe changes, we paused to reflect on the significance of the day. We celebrated not just a birthday, but the resilience of a woman who had shouldered the responsibilities of her family with grace and dignity. It was a moment of gratitude, a chance to honour a mother's love that knew no bounds.
Each photograph told a story, a narrative of love, strength, and unity. And as we bid farewell to the studio, I carried with me not just memories captured on film, but a profound appreciation for the power of maternal love.
After the session, I immediately proceeded to the post-production and delivered the edited photos to my friend. They all loved it and their mother was excited about the photos as well.
Today, as we celebrate Mother's Day, I am reminded of that unforgettable photoshoot—a testament to the enduring bond between a mother and her children, and the profound impact of a woman's love on those she holds dear. I also want to use this opportunity to celebrate every wonderful mother and future mother. Your love, sacrifice, and unwavering support make the world a brighter place.
