Astrophysicists have conducted extensive studies of nutrino emission from the sun's core in order to gain a greater understanding of the processes behind nuclear fusion. Theories have suggested the involvement of carbon and nitrogen nuclei as the two additional constituents in the chain reaction.

Observational analysis, as recently reported by scientists at Borexino undergroung experiment in Italy, revealed a dual process in the powering of the sun. The first points consists of the aformentioned constituents and the other involves a proton-proton chain. The findings are still preliminary and more data collection is to follow as well as the requisite peer review.
