First plant that captures CO2 and transforms it into rock/Primera planta que captura el CO2 y lo transforma en roca

We have already mentioned that some scientists believe that, even if we stop emitting carbon dioxide tomorrow, the consequences of climate change will not stop due to the large amount of CO2 that has already accumulated in the atmosphere, which is why it is necessary not to not only stop emitting but also remove the existing CO2.

There are several projects in development for this purpose but the Swiss company Climework has inaugurated the first viable plant in the world that collects carbon dioxide from the environment and traps it underground, which currently removes 4,000 tons of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent to the emissions of nine hundred gasoline cars.

Something similar to air conditioning units but the size of a container with a large number of fans placed on top of each other, which suck the air from the environment, capturing the carbon dioxide through filters, the resulting carbon dioxide is mixed with water and injected under earth under pressure where it will remain for millions of years.

The choice of Iceland as the place to build this plant is not coincidental. On the one hand, Iceland has a lot of volcanic activity and volcanoes are precisely one of the largest sources of emissions, on the other hand, the subsoil is composed mainly of basalts, which are volcanic porous rocks ideal for retaining CO2.

The company's plan is that in the future the large carbon dioxide-emitting industries in the world will hire its services to deposit their emissions in its facilities in Iceland to, in this way, reach the scale of gigatonnes removed because ultimately the atmosphere is the same for everyone and its pollution affects us all equally.

What I like most about the solution is that it does not try to limit the emissions of companies, which would imply a significant cost of adaptation both in time and money, but that companies currently in operation can continue emitting and Climework will be in charge of removing the CO2 and bury it forever.

Incredible. In my opinion, the way forward is to remove the CO2 from the atmosphere because it's impossible to reduce emissions significantly without greatly impacting our quality of life.

That's fascinating! It makes sense chemically to store it in basalts. I guess the big question is where are they getting the energy to run the units? Ideally geothermal would be great if it could produce enough the Icelandic vents.
