A Look At Blissey ex From Japan's Mask of Change, Massive 300 HP [Pokemon TCG]

in #pokemontcglast month

Hi there. In this Pokemon trading card game post, I feature Blissey ex from Japan's Mask of Change that is to be released in late April. For the international crowd this card would be released along many others as a part of the Twilight Masquerade expansion in May 2024.

Blissey ex Card

Blissey is the evolved form of Chansey. Both Blissey and Chansey look like giant pink moving eggs that are friendly and caring by nature. In the anime and games Chansey and Blissey are often in the Pokemon centers helping Nurse Joy heal injured Pokemon.

In the video game Blissey does have a lot of HP than the average Pokemon. With this Blissey ex card it is like that too. This Blissey ex card has 300 HP which is massive for a Stage 1 Pokemon and it is up there with Stage 2 Pokemon's HPs. You need Chansey in order to evolve it into Blissey or this Blissey ex.

The screenshot above is from Bulbapedia.

Its attack of Return does a respectable 180 damage for 3 colourless energy. What makes this Return attack good is that you may draw cards until you have 6 cards in hand. A decent attack with a good draw cards effect is too good to ignore.

Blissey ex's ability of Happy Switch is interesting. Once during your turn, you may move a Basic Energy from 1 of your Pokemon to another Pokemon.
It is comparable to the Item card Energy Switch. Being able to change Basic energy from one to another is not exactly energy accleration but it helps power up attackers that you want to attack with in certain situations.

Possible Combos

I think it is best to use Blissey ex with good energy acceleration and good attackers.

Chansey Lucky Bonus With Blissey ex

As Blissey ex needs to be evolved from Chansey you can use this Chansey from the 151 set expansion with its Lucky Bonus ability.

The Lucky Bonus allows the player the option to bench Chansey when it is picked from prize cards as a result of knockouts of opponent's Pokemon. If you choose to bench this Lucky Bonus Chansey in this way you flip a coin. If heads you take one more prize card. This extra card could be another Chansey Lucky Bonus so it can stack.

This combo sounds cool in theory where you can put 4 of these Chanseys in a deck and see how lucky you can get. I don't know how this would work in practice. I am sure there will be people in Japan first that will try this and then the overseas people.

Magma Basin

Magma Basin is a stadium card that allows either player once per turn attach one Fire energy card from the discard pile to a Benched Fire Pokemon. The drawback is that that Fire Pokemon takes 20 damage. Use this with Blissey ex to power up an attacker from zero energy to two Basic energies. That is one Fire Energy from Magma Basin then Blissey's ability and the second from manual attachment for turn. You could also do Fire Energy plus Double Turbo Energy to attack with Blissey ex. (Note that the 180 damage turns into 160 with Double Turbo Energy)

Dark Patch From Dark Decks

Dark Patch is an item card from the F regulation block where you can attach a Basic Dark Energy from the discard pile to one of your Benched Dark Pokemon. Combo this with Blissey ex to powerup an attacker. You can do one Dark Patch plus manual Energy attachment for two energy cards in one turn. An extra Dark Patch allows for additional energy accleration to the bench.

Xatu's Clairvoyant Sense

Xatu provides an interesting mixture of energy acceleration for Psychic energies and draw power. As Xatu does energy accleration for Psychic energies on Benched Pokemon, Blissey ex can move the a Basic energy from a Benched Pokemon to another Pokemon.

Professor's Sada's Vitality

This combo may or may not work well in practice.

You could maybe run one Chansey and one Blissey in an Ancient themed deck like Raging Bolt ex. (Not so much in Ancient Box where you need lots of Ancients in the discard pile for the Roaring Moon's Vengeance Fletching attack). Professor Sada's Vitality can accelerate Basic Energies to the ancient Pokemon and you can use Blissey ex to move of the the Basic energies from one Ancient Pokemon to another Pokemon.

Pros

  • Stage 1 Pokemon with 300 HP is massive.

  • Being able to draw cards with its attack.

  • Colourless attacker means that it is compatiable with any energy type. (Splashable)

  • Happy Switch ability for moving Basic Energy allows for interesting combos and support for different attackers.

Cons

  • Four retreat cost is pretty high. It can stuck in the active spot for a while in you do not have the item card Switch.

  • Its attack of 180 damage does not one hit knockout a lot of Basic Vs, Basic exs and evolved ex Pokemon.

  • Fighting weakness.

  • Ability does not work with Special Energies.

Conclusion

I think that this Blissey ex is too good to ignore. I don't think this would be a staple in every deck but it is compatible with many decks that have some sort of energy acceleration. It has a lot of HP, the ability is good and you can draw more cards with its attack.

If this card gets super popular then the price of this could be easily 10 CAD or above.
