Keep Your Distance

In this week’s Battle Mage Secrets, we look at the Going the Distance ruleset and see what strategy works when only Range units can be used in the battle. This is a good opportunity to use the Close Range ability and Return Fire ability. It's a good opportunity to use the Headwind and Shield abilities.

For this battle, General Sloan is my summoner as I want to boost my Range attacks by 1.

1st position - Anachron Bolter - Headwinds ability reduces my opponent's attacks by 1 and can also attack from the front with its dual magic attack.
2nd position - Halving Alchemist - Able to halve the opponent's attack in case he uses a strong tank at the front.
3rd position - Ajax Lightfoot - A strong 3 range attack and also bloodlust to increase the attack as the battle goes on. Only problem is that this is a reverse speed battle as well.
4th position - Pelacor Arbalest - Double strike to do lots of damage to my opponent every round and perhaps even multiple opponents.

The big challenge in a Range only battle is that once a Range unit goes up front, it becomes immobile and unable to attack. A sitting duck. So it's important to be able to either put one that has a lot of life, with the Close Range ability or dual attack up front.

The battle wasn't going according to plan early on with the Anachron Bolter dying a little too early. This meant not having a unit that can attack from the front and I regretted not including one of the usual dual attack cards like the War Elephant in the line up.

Big gulp... not looking good and I was in danger of having my last unit up front and not able to attack. Especially with my opponent having a Divine Shield, it makes my first attack useless.

But that's where the Arbelest shines especially with a +1 attack boost, allowing it to take out a weak opponent unit in one round. So I was able to turn the tables and make it such that my opponent's last unit was brought to the front and made useless in battle.

Eventually, I won the battle since my opponent had no attack left. You can catch a replay of the entire battle here: https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_9f4ae2f3dd1324e901eaa3b252657687&ref=charcoalbuffet

Hope you enjoyed this Going the Distance battle. See you in the next Battle Mage Secrets.

Sort:

It felt like a game you'd actually lose in the beginning, big ups to the halving and the card with the magic and range attack have you some leverage before it was taken out..

I definitely thought I was going to lose that one. The doublestrike came to the rescue.
