Splinterlands is one of the most popular web3 games on Hive and in general with many active players. We are celebrating 6 years of Splinterlands but still, I get a lot of questions on how to start splinterlands or what to do to start playing. Hopefully, this post will be helpful for all of them.
I have shared some of the tips in my earlier posts too but here is another updated one.
Splinterlands is a strategy trading Card game which allows the players to battle against real players each battle poses some challenges and one must build a good lineup with the limited resources and constraints provided in the battle and come out on top. Due to the amount of abilities and the unique cards present in the game, it can easily become overwhelming for new players.
Play to learn, not just Play to Win
Many newbies in the game think only about the outcome of the game and not so much about the process and learning the strategies and various abilities and rulesets, which is a huge problem. Just like in other aspects of life, the focus should be on learning the process and not focusing too much on the results, if the process is good, the results will eventually start to come in. I know it is easier said than done but it can done by analyzing every game we play, reading about various strategies, and compositions and testing them out on the battlefield.
Many places to find Help
There are so many online spaces where you can discuss the game and find a lot of interested people who are willing to help you. Discord has a lot of communities including the official Splinterlands discord server. You can find various guides, frequently asked questions and common issues new players face and some veterans are quite helpful in answering all of your queries. I got helped a lot there in my earlier days.
Other than Discord, you can find a lot of other platforms and forums. There are a lot of YouTube playlists too and I watched a lot of those in my earlier days. I bet there are still enough people talking about the game.
Join Events and Tournaments
There are a lot of Events organised by the community and you can find a list here. There are some which you can enter for free or close to free and can win big. Even if you don't win anything it would be a good way to see what the other players are using, it is a great way to see their strategies and analyse them afterwards and try to use similar strategies in your games too.
Expect to lose many games in the beginning as they can get very competitive but they are one of the best ways to learn the game.
Another important part is to join a guild quickly. You can talk to players on the splinterlands discord or on the blockchain and soon you will find a guild. There are so many advantages of being in a guild and fighting brawl. They not only give you extra rewards but are a great platform to discuss your strategy and learn from experienced players.
Let me summarize all the above and put it in easy-to-read bullet points:
- Practice, practice and practice (There is no shortcut to this, you just have to play the game for longer)
- Join communities on discords, telegrams, Hive etc (If you are reading this, you have joined at least one of them. Explore more!)
- Share your experience with others and blog on Hive. Also, take part in challenges like this (When you write and explain your strategies you will understand it much better, just try it.)
- Don't get too attached to the result of the game and focus more on learning the strategies (As I said before, focus on the process not just on the results)
- Rent your way up if you can't afford to buy cards (No need to buy a $150 card just rent them for much cheaper and see if it helps)
- If you are feeling frustrated just take a rest and come back again the next day. Don't push too much, you will end up losing more!
- Watch replays and don't skip them (Especially when you are trying new strategies and units)
- Go to the help section of Splinterlands website and read all the resources!
- Take part in tournaments and other challenges.
- Join a Guild and play Brawls, which will help you get extra rewards.
- Make friends and HAVE FUN! (This is the most important of them all)

Playing to earn has always been the mindset of a lot of new players. But can you blame them? The game is a play2ern game but what most people don't want to do is learn. Like every game you must first learn how to play and then when you're eventually a pro then it all works out.
learning is always the best thing to do. I must say it has been an awesome journey.
