It began as a simple thumb injury. Then, it spiralled into a dangerous syndrome where a man's gut essentially became a brewery fermenting its own endless alcohol supply - which is not as fun as it sounds.
His troubles began in 2011, after he completed a course of antibiotics for a thumb injury. Within one week of finishing the meds, he reported experiencing uncharacteristic personality changes, including depression, 'brain fog', aggressive behaviour, and memory loss.
I saw the headline of this article and it caught my attention with just how weird it would be to get drunk off your own "home brew" but after reading the article I realized this more of a warning for folks about the dangers of using Antibiotics than anything else.
When you go to the doctor for an illness it feels like they always give you a prescription for antibiotics whether it's necessary or not. They tell you take it a full week or two and that you may experience diarrhea or other common symptoms but they never mention that the antibiotic will destroy your gut bacteria as well.
In this article the antibiotics killed off this guys good gut bacteria and yeast moved in and complete messed up this guys digestive track. Luckily he had some smart doctors to figure it out but in my experience smart docs are hard to find. Most docs just do what the medical books tell them to do so they get paid from the insurance companies and don't investigate much further. I wonder how many other people are suffering like this because antibiotics mess them up and don't know they can fix their health problems with a good source of probiotics.
"We believe that our patient's symptoms were triggered by exposure to antibiotics, which resulted in a change in his gastrointestinal microbiome allowing fungal overgrowth," the authors explain, noting that we are only starting to recognise the complexity of this rare and probably under-diagnosed condition.
A good warning article for anyone taking antibiotics.

Most are little more than pharmaceutical pimps anymore. Shame they aren't held liable (except in extreme cases) for all the pills they push.
I myself going through GERD and Gall Bladder issues have come across many incompetent Doctors. The first few times I went to the ER they said I was having Anxiety Attacks... Extreme bloating that doesn't go away for like 12 hours is "Anxiety" to these geniuses...Thousands of USD later finally get through a bunch of tests and its Gallbladder issues.... To the condescending Doctors at the ER who told me to get Mental Help and that I was "experiencing all the classic symtpoms of a panic attack, fuck you! I went through numerous Gallbladder attacks and massively was bloated. After it wasn't "panic attacks anymore" they pushed so many antacid pills and PPIs and H2 blockers on me that did absolutely nothing. They also prescribed me anti-anxiety pills too... Its like fucking handing out candy on halloween with these people.
Sorry you went through that. They helped my mom punish my dad after he left her back in the 70's, and then due to a work accident on his back they did several surgeries and growing prescriptions as the years went by. They destroyed him, making him a shell of his former self. He finally died from being septic after they replaced his pacemaker. He had several Dr visits weekly and they never noticed he was septic for months.
I could share lots of stories of their incompetence, but you know firsthand. The scary thing is that for many women they have become the new religion.
