Urban composting worms moved homes!

gm frens!

I hope you're having a lovely Sunday. I know I am, because today I finally have some enriched compost (otherwise known as "black gold") to mix with my plants' soil. About 3 weeks ago we no longer fed our red wigglers in their usual, second-tier composting bin. We used a brand new one and stacked it on the top (third tier) with fresh substrate and soil.
We drilled holes in the bottom of the bin so that the worms in the middle bin could find their way to the top, where the food was.

Well, today is the day to check on them.

This is now the top tier bin.
As you can see, It's full of food and worms!

and is nicely covered with fresh soil, so they can relax in their new home.

The second bin has practically no worms left in it. They've all crawled up through the holes and into their new home. All that's left is a huge bin full of enriched compost. There are still some stragglers, so I think we'll leave it a few weeks longer and then manually pick out whatever worms were unable to find their way to the new bin on the third floor.

This here is all compost:

For anyone wondering, this is what our indoor composting system looks like. The "black gold" is made up of worm castings (compost) and our red wigglers are crawling up into the active area with food scraps.

We leave or composting system in a cool, dark area in our small, downtown apartment and check on it about once a month.

And no, it doesn't stink.

Our indoor garden is always growing and today will get a dose of delicious compost and worm tea :)

Right now we're doing this as a hobby and to reduce food waste, but have been talking with @pamarias about considering doing it as a business. We work on it during the weekends and who knows, perhaps one day we can make it happen if it makes business sense.

We don't plan on scaling it massively, just a little side project that can bring in a little extra income.

I love your cover photos, man. You designed this one great. Or was it designed by artificial intelligence?

They really look so alive and moving XD I hope they love their new home.

Haha no, this was designed by my own human intelligence using Canva. Maybe I should practice some more graphic design.

The worms are as happy as they look in the cover image :) They seem to love their new home.

That is awesome. Those look like happy and healthy worms. I used to do vermicomposting as well, but I didn't have as good a setup as yours. I only used regular bins with no holes in the bottom for the vermitea. So it was very difficult to keep the environment stable for the worms. Your post makes me want to try it out again.

Do it!

These are regular bins, I just drilled holes in the lids and bottoms. The whole setup is very low maintenance.

You convinced me. I'll give it a shot again then. I'll add really small holes to control the moisture.

I didn't know that you are doing worm composting!! I have a good friend who does it, but not indoors, and on a bigger scale...

He is writing nice posts on Facebook but also adds a lot of photos... It is in the Serbian language, but with a translator, maybe you can find some useful information... (https://www.facebook.com/kalifornijskeglisteprodaja)
He is more focused on selling worms, but you already know that "business" with worms is a win-win situation... You get more worms and more compost... :)

Cheers!

Oh wow! he's not playing around! This is the real deal. Love to see it. Yeah, this is something I would consider doing more seriously, but for now it's just a hobby and a way to reduce food waste :) Thanks for sharing your friend's project with me.

That’s awesome
If I may ask, is that loamy soil?

Yes it is. It's worked as a good starting environment for the new food scraps area of the worm farm.

You must have really done a great job in providing the plant the necessary condition to grow even in indoor

I try to proivde the right amount of light, water and enriched compost from my system.
