Suddenly everything around us looks transformed. Of course, it was no surprise, because everything happened exactly as it had in previous years. In April, work began on plowing up the fields that had lain fallow since last autumn, after which they were flooded. And last but not least, hard-working hands set about planting all the countless small rice plants in the wet soil. Fortunately, this is no longer done by hand, but with the help of modern technology, which has made rice cultivation more professional and efficient. Only in the end do you still have to bend down from time to time to push a few last plants into the ground around the edges, where the machines have not reached.
Most of the rice fields in our region are planted by now and in many places the landscape looks like a patchwork of many small lakes and ponds, which are lined up to the horizon, and probably far beyond. There is something very calming about this view and it is suddenly so familiar again. Just as it was exactly a year ago, and the year before that, because fortunately some things never change.

Auf einmal sieht alles um uns herum aus wie verwandelt. Natürlich war es keine Überraschung, denn alles passierte ja genau so wie in den letzten Jahren auch. Im April wurde damit angefangen, die seit dem letzten Herbst brachliegenden Felder umzupflügen, welche im Anschluss dann geflutet wurden. Und zu allerletzt haben sich fleißige Hände daran gemacht, all die unzähligen kleinen Reispflanzen in die nasse Erde zu bringen. Glücklicherweise geschieht dies heutzutage nicht mehr per Hand, sondern mit Hilfe moderner Technologie, welche den Reisanbau professioneller und effizienter gemacht hat. Nur am Ende muss man sich dann doch nochab und zu bücken, um am Rand, dort wo die Maschinen nicht hingekommen sind, noch ein paar letzte Pflanzen in den nassen Boden zu drücken.
Der Großteil der Reisfelder in unserer Region is bepflanzt und die Landschaft wirkt an vielen Stellen wie ein ein Puzzle aus vielen kleinen Seen und Teichen, welche aneinandergereiht bis zum Horizont reichen, und wohl auch noch weit darüber hinaus. Diese Anblick hat etwas sehr beruhigendes und ist auf einmal wieder so vertraut. So wie auch vor genau einem Jahr schon, und in dem Jahr davor, denn manche Sachen ändern sich zum Glück nie.
The lake landscape around us is truly enchanting and manages to give the whole area a fresh new look. Somehow, everything seems new again and you feel as if you've just started over and something has been set in motion. The rice will now grow in the lakes, which are actually rice fields, and the rice plants, however small, will be significantly larger in a few weeks' time, swaying in the increasingly warm wind. In the approaching summer, they will then reach peak form and slowly turn golden and yellow before being harvested in the fall, as in so many years before. An eternal cycle that appears to be so simple, but which is the basis of life here in Japan.
Die Seenlandschaft um uns herum ist wirklich bezaubernd und schafft es, dem ganzen Landstrich einen frischen Anstrich zu verpassen. Alles wirkt wieder irgendwie wie neu und man spürt auch selber dieses Gefühl, als wenn man gerade wieder am Anfang steht und etwas in Bewegung gekommen ist. Denn in den Seen, die ja eigentlich Reisfelder sind, wird der Reis nun wachsen und die noch so kleinen Reispflanzen werden in ein paar Wochen schon bedeutend größer sein und sich im immer wärmer werdenen Wind wiegen. Im nahenden Sommer werden sie dann zu Höchstform auflaufen und sich langsam goldgelb verfärben, bevor sie dann wie in so vielen Jahren zuvor im Herbst abgeerntet werden. Ein ewiger Kreislauf, der so simpel scheint aber welcher doch ja die Grundlage vom Leben hier in Japan darstellt.
As every year, I will take a close look and watch the rice grow. The many small and sometimes large rice fields are what make up the charm and appeal of the landscape here and can be so enchanting. I would never want to miss the sight of them for anything in this world. Every time I'm out and about in my car, I'm delighted anew by all that splendid beauty I see around me. And when the sun is shining and reflected in the new lakescape that surrounds me, I immediately remember why I'm here. As if I could ever have forgotten...
Ich werde wie in jedem Jahr ganz genau hinsehen und dem Reis beim Wachsen zusehen. Die vielen kleinen und machmal auch großen Reisfelder sind es, die den Charme und den Reiz der Landschaft hier ausmachen und so bezaubernd sein können, dass ich ihren Anblick um nichts auf der Welt missen wollt. Jedes Mal, wenn ich mit am Auto unterwegs bin, erfreue ich mich erneut an all der wunderbaren Schönheit, die ich hier zu zu sehen bekomme. Und wenn dann noch die Sonne scheint und sich in der neuen Seenlandschaft um mich herum spiegelt, weiß ich sofort wieder, warum ich hier bin. Als hätte ich es denn auch je vergessen können...
