After a beautiful Saturday that we used for a tour of Novi Sad, on a rainy Sunday, I'm sitting in my apartment and figuring out how to put together the story I'm going to tell you for the #BeerSaturday challenge.
While we were sitting on the banks of the Danube River at the popular "Štrand" in Novi Sad and enjoying the rays of the sun, I thought: "Where could we go for lunch?".
There were two or three restaurant options, but I was thinking of how to somehow combine #Beer with lunch.
So that beer would also be on the menu, the only option was to go to a pub.
Since I already wrote about the Novi Sad beer hall "Brauhaus", I thought that it would be better to go to a beer hall that I have not been to before, to try some new beer that is brewed and poured in Novi Sad.
The decision fell on the "Gradska pivnica (City pub)" in Novi Sad in the very center of the city, right next to the cathedral "Name of Mary Catholic church".
The first pub in Novi Sad was opened ten years before the most famous pub in the world, the Irish "Guinness".
The beer hall was opened in 1748 by Ignac Heil, the first mayor of Novi Sad. In the same year 1748, Novi Sad became a free royal city, buying its independence from Empress Maria Theresa of Vienna for 80,000 forints
The "Varoška" beer hall worked until the bombing of Novi Sad in 1849. The Timisoara brewer, Josif Macvanski, wanted to restore it to its former glory and build a new beer hall in the same place. They didn't allow that. Namely, the city sold that plot in order to build the "Carica Jelisaveta" hotel, today's "Vojvodina". The only large beer hall in Novi Sad after the First World War was the MB beer hall. During the civil war of the nineties, "Petlovo beer" was sold in Novi Sad, but after a few years it disappeared from the scene.
Today, "Gradska pivnica" continues a long-established tradition.
We settled on benches in the garden of the city pub with a view of the cathedral tower and perused the beer and food menu carefully.
There were four of us, so we decided on a combination meal for four with sausages, wings and skewers with the addition of a portion of ribs.
Everyone chose the drink for themselves.
One Coca-Cola and two industrial beers: Pauliner and Kozel.
And as for me, who is the only craft beer drinker in that company, the choice was a little more complicated.
I decided to try the beer brewed in a brewery in Novi Sad.
Hog brewery, which was founded in 2018 and offers Hog Mjolnir, Hog Thor, Hog Loki and Hog Freyja.
First I ordered a Hog Mjolnir draft beer which was brought to me in a non Hog glass 🙂.
The excuse was that it was a new, small brewery and they hadn't printed their glasses yet.
OK, what matters to me is the taste and smell of the beer, not the glass from which I drink it.
But I later found out that there are glasses printed with the Hog logo in the Hog pub. I promise, next time I'll drink from a Hog branded glass 🙂
Hog Mjolnir is a New England IPA style of beer, with 6.4% alcohol. Light and strong beer
A cloudy refreshing beer with a thick, creamy foam. The citrus aroma and taste make this beer refreshing on summer days.
Along with delicious sausages, chicken wings, skewers and ribs, I had a bottle of Hog Thor beer as my second beer.
Thor is an IPA, more hoppy, always first in the column. This beer is as strong as the hops in it.
Dark special unfiltered and unpasteurized beer, with 6.5% alcohol.
In addition to the citrus notes, you can feel caramel in taste.
I enjoyed drinking this delicious beer with a view of this Novi Sad cathedral.
Before we left, I also visited the interior of the pub. beautiful interior, indicated that I will definitely visit again.
One fact that I didn't know until now, which is written on the cover of the cutlery:
"The first hop seedlings arrived in Serbia from Prague more than 250 years ago".
Thanks to the brothers from Prague for this. If they hadn't brought hop seedlings 250 years ago, the question is whether I would be here today enjoying this wonderful hazy beer.
