El pasado fin de semana se fue de este mundo Juan María Traverso, para la gran mayoría de los amigos del feed de #fulldeportes seguramente es un ilustre desconocido y por ello, para honrar su figura, porque el deporte forja grandes hombres y mujeres, pero como en una simbiosis indisoluble los hombres y mujeres forjan los grandes deportes, no puedo ni quiero dejar de contarles su historia, el "Flaco" lo merece.
Traverso fue un piloto de competición que comenzó su carrera a los 21 años de edad cuando en octubre del año 1971 debutó en la máxima categoría del automovilismo local, el Turismo Carretera, popularmente conocido como TC. Desde el comienzo mostró dotes de gran conductor y obtuvo su primera victoria en esa categoría un año después, en Octubre de 1972 cuando se impuso en el circuito semipermanente de 25 de Mayo.
El primer título demoró más de lo que hubiera querido, recién llego en 1977, luego vendrían otros 5 para ubicarlo tercero en el historial entre los pilotos con más campeonatos en esa tradicional y popular categoría, solo por detrás de otros dos grandes pilotos como Juan Gálvez con 9 y Guillermo Ortelli con 7 campeonatos respectivamente.
Sus extraordinarias dotes conductivas lo llevaron a intentar una aventura en Europa, corrió toda una temporada con un F2 de Brabham gracias al auspicio de Ford y el apoyo de Bernie Ecclestone, firmó un contrato con la misma escudería de la cual el propio Ecclestone era dueño, para correr al año siguiente en la máxima categoría del automovilismo internacional, la F1 y en esa línea llegó a probar un Brabham BT 49 en Silverstone, sin embargo, problemas financieros de su padre lo hicieron desistir de esa oportunidad y volver a Ramallo, su pueblo natal para ayudarlo a recuperarse.
De vuelta en Argentina siguió corriendo en el TC e incursionó en otras categorías, ganó 3 títulos en el Top Race y otros 7 en el Turismo Competición 2000 (4 en forma consecutiva) donde fue ídolo de multitudes, especialmente por su carácter combativo hasta el límite de su medio mecánico.
Aún recuerdo una carrera donde ganó con el auto incendiado desde casi una vuelta antes de la meta, con otro auto conducido por Silvio Oltra a escasos metros por detrás intentando rebasarlo, cuando bajaron la bandera a cuadros coronando su actuación, descendió rápidamente del coupé Renault Fuego (paradójicamente ese era el modelo) que inmediatamente fue rodeada de bomberos y auxiliares con extinguidores para apagar las llamas que salían de abajo del chasis.
Esa carrera lo elevó a la máxima consideración del público amante de las competencias del deporte motor, pero no fue su única hazaña, tuvo otros hechos curiosos de esos que marcaron su impronta en la consideración general, en otra carrera de TC2000 disputada en Alta Gracia, provincia de Córdoba en 1998, Traverso llegó segundo con un Honda Civic y en 3 ruedas, una vuelta antes del final perdió increíblemente una rueda trasera, aunque eso no impidió que continuara acelerando para cruzar la meta solo por detrás de su compañero de equipo Omar Martínez. Y si piensan que fue casualidad, les digo que no, en otra carrera con otra Renault Fuego también llegó en 3 ruedas y terminó segundo.
Otra característica distintiva del "Flaco", apodo que acompañó a Traverso durante toda su extensa trayectoria, fue que no tuvo una identificación absoluta con ninguna marca como es bastante habitual en las competencias automovilísticas vernáculas, para que nadie se pelee, ganó 3 títulos de TC con Ford y otros 3 con Chevrolet.
Este domingo, con 16 campeonatos en sus alforjas y a los 73 años de edad, falleció en su ciudad natal de Ramallo luego de una larga enfermedad.
Seguramente se sentará en junto a Fangio, los hermanos Gálvez, Reutemann y varios otros, a disfrutar de las carreras por toda la eternidad.

Another distinctive characteristic of the "Flaco", the nickname that accompanied Traverso throughout his extensive career, was that he did not have an absolute identification with any brand as is quite common in vernacular automobile competitions, so that no one quarrels, he won 3 TC titles with Ford and another 3 with Chevrolet.
This Sunday, with 16 championships under his belt and at 73 years of age, he died in his hometown of Ramallo after a long illness.
He will surely sit alongside Fangio, the Gálvez brothers, Reutemann, and several others, enjoying the races for all eternity.
