Sometimes he comes like ordered — The Blues. But arriving always in another guise.

Without wasting a single thought on the fact that a post for #threetunetuesday, based on @ablaze's idea, could ever come out of the somewhat tidy mess that is my head, I clung to the realisation that I too am the kind of person who categorises what I see, hear or write and then puts it in drawers or on shelves. The labels range from "all right" to "okay" to "total rubbish". As a rule, I re-classify what I've saved and label it with emotional terms, all of which are borrowed from the world of music. Rock 'n' roll, funk, jazz, heavy metal, classical, or blues - and today you can have a look at this folder labelled Blues.

Have they searched for each other and found each other or seen the light of day together? The blues and the music.

The blues seems to me to be something like the most original form of music there is. When do you write the most emotional songs of all? Whenever you have the feeling that you are in a fight against fate, against the world and against everything else that is trying to conspire against you. Then they flow almost of their own accord, the words that are so sad they can barely stand on their own two feet. But it doesn't always have to be in words. Sometimes a melody is all it takes.

What is the definition of the blues according to the "scholars" of music?
The blues is characterised by the typical use of so-called "blue notes", a musical style with a mostly solemn and melancholic character, which emerged at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a form of Afro-American folklore in the USA through the fusion of African, European and Caribbean elements.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that composers before the 19th century didn't have a bar or two to thank the blues for? They went from the major key to the minor and they used the dignified adagio as a basis.
Frédéric Chopin seems to have been very much at home with the blues. Stjepan Hauser, who got out his Cello for the Nocturne op. 15. 1 in C-sharp minor, gives us a small impression here.

I am far from being in doubt about the judgement of the music experts. The feeling of loneliness, melancholy and wistfulness has been captured by musicians such as: Mathis James Reed, Marion Walter Jacobs, Chester Burnett, Johnny Lamont Merrett or Otis Hicks. But there are also women who feel the blues. Like Sue Foley, for example, who makes no secret of her experience. Following in the footsteps of her Texan ancestors, this blues expert is no stranger to the blues. These include Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Vaughan, Billy Gibbons (ZZ-Top), Mike Flanigin or Chris Layton (Double Trouble).

But a question does have a place. Don't we all have D minor somewhere in our hearts? It is the emotion that makes us feel the ache in our stomachs, the heartache and the lack of perspective as if it were a special offer at the supermarket. And, I must admit, it's fun to access the melancholy and to sink into it. In conclusion, then, an artist who has impressed me like no other with the diversity of his work: Djordje Balašević. He expresses his sadness simply in his D minor, where all that remains of the person with whom he had spent so many hours, days and months is an album by Ry Cooder. For me, this is the blues par excellence!

I will end with a very personal comment. If I had ever felt that I was transforming a community of two into a single existence, then I would never have had the misfortune of carelessly leaving behind a vinyl recorded by Ry Cooder. It can't be that hectic to leave such a treasure behind on a voluntary basis. By the way, I have expressed the wish that the Ry Cooder records should be placed in my wooden box after my death. No matter where I end up after that, I am sure that someone will have a record player with them.

Sort:

Oh wow you've just hit on a couple of my absolute faves there- both old and new!

Ry Cooder being the old as I have loved his melodies for many years and Hauser being the new as I discovered him through a FB post about a year or so ago, and was even gong to go and see him a couple of months ago on his most recent tour of Australia but I couldn't as I was dealing with my dad's illness and subsequent death at the time...Such a shame...Next time.

Thanks so much for introducing me to Sue Foley. She's definitely got talent!

Sorry about your dad.
Stjepan Hauser is certainly not thinking about the end of his career just yet. So there will be plenty of opportunities to see him on stage.
In fact, Sue Foley has been a fixture in the blues music scene for many years now (with 15 studio albums to date).

Thanks for that, but it was a blessing in disguise, for everyone but mostly dad. He was 88 so he had a good innings and we all had an amazing life because of the brilliant father he was.

So happy to know that Stjepan will be around for much longer, but in saying that, you just never know so opportunities need to be taken and need to be made as much as possible- just incase....

It's weird that I have never heard about this Sue Foley, though we have many women in Australia with that same name too...lol...

Even though a lot of people didn't love or prefer the blues as a genre of music, I still love it

Blues is a genre of music that I really love. It goes solemnly and not the type that will stress you out. The good thing is that artistes who sing blues always have the perfect lyrics that could catch your attention

The blues till today still sound as the original form of music for me
