On Kettles and Style over Substance....

When did Kettles become style items rather than functional items....?

I was glad to find a kettle in my hotel room during my recent hotel-stay (along with a well-stocked, albethey instant variety of teas, coffees and hot chocolate), but the kettle itself was a TERRIBLE design.

This was mainly because of one thing... it having a VERY wide base for such a small kettle....

This meant you had to REALLY tip it to 90 degrees to get all of the water out (I like to fill kettles as little as possible, just over the element). And because of this - you couldn't help but get steam burns, as you couldn't get yer hand that far down the handle.

Another annoying feature of this (obviously cheap) kettle was the overboil - A good 10 seconds of boiling AFTER it had actually boiled, just an awful waste of energy. And all so you can get BURNT more with the steam!

Design over function....?

Theoretically no - kettles with large basis allow more contact with the heat source, so make for a quicker boil.

However, when it comes to electric kettles it's relatively easy to get a really quick boil with a small-ish element in a thinner kettle, like my one at home does, which is the same shape as these bad boys...

From Good HouseKepping's's best kettles for 2024, and note they are all relatively thin, meaning less steam burning when you poor!

And it's not as if my hotel kettle looks that nice anyway, and come on, in a hotel, with limited space, you should be looking for a thinner kettle, not a big-based desk hog.

NB I'm not against style.....

I mean I love these Le Crueset kettles...

These have a wide base because it's necessary to have a large contact area with the stove, and yes you get steam burned when you pour, but hell it's worth it, because where heating is concerned this is functional and it looks classically nice too.

But a wide based electrical kettle in a hotel room which overboils and gives you steam burns, that's just an irritation!

A kettle with integrated chimney.
Probably impossible to clean the insides, but super efficient.

Is that like a Kelly kettle? Hole in the middle - interesting idea for a base camp!

Never heard of a Kelly kettle...
Seems to be the same principle, but slightly different style.
The Kelly would seem easier to clean, though.

Today we see that people are doing the same thing, they buy a stylish thing, even if its functions are not good, then they say that if it is lying in the house, it will look good, then this thing is very wrong, always a good quality thing. We should buy something that will not bother us in the future and fulfill our needs.

Hello @revisesociology ! 😅

I had a friend and colleague at work who had a very peculiar characteristic. As well as being an excellent person with a huge heart, he could say the most outrageous things and people wouldn't even notice what he'd said (content), but the way he said them, the delicacy and friendliness... Unfortunately, he has already left this world. Do you also have this characteristic that my friend had? 😁 🤣

ps: The image reflected in the chrome of the kettle is top! Ahaha 😅
