Just another day

It was going to be one of those days.

The air hot and humid, full of dessert dust coming all the way from Africa. The sky dark and reddish, as we are part of a dystopian movie. The brilliant spring weather only a memory from the past weeks. It is the third time this year that Greece is covered by Sahara dust for a few days and I would say that it is more than enough.

Nevertheless the dog wanted his walk and so did I.

And since I have neglected my blog the last weeks, I took my camera along. Setting it in advance in the monochrome profile, as I was sure that my usual walk, would be totally different this day!

I met a couple from Germany totally inconsolable. They happened to visit Nafplio exactly the same day that the dust came. And they are meant to return north before it clears. Bad luck indeed. They were craving for Greek sun and they got another version of the gloomy weather they have, all year long, at their home town.

It is not only that it is unpleasant to be outside when the dust hits, it is also unhealthy. And if you have asthma or any other breathing condition, it could even be dangerous.

But a few swimmers were already in the sea. They didn't seem to mind the weather!

If you have seen this scenery in any of my previous posts, you know what I am talking about. Colour or no colour the heavy atmosphere is more than evident. And that eerie light has nothing to do with the bright Mediterranean days that we are used of.

But it is something out of the ordinary and not bad for photography after all :)

Such a drastic change in the air is changing the landscape itself. I am in familiar places but I feel like I am in a foreign country, or even planet. Everything looks strange, uncanny, even unearthly.

And the sea totally still and heavy, like it is not made of water but another liquid, thick and dark.

Even the old town looks older than usual, more stiff, a bit sinister and grim.

It is probably my fantasy though, going wild, since people seem to be walking carefree and unconcerned, enjoying their day and pretending that it is just another day!

This is my entry for the #monomad challenge.

The camera that I used is a Canon EOS 6D mark II with an EF 24-105mm f4/L zoom lens attached. I edited the photographs in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic

All the pictures are just remarkably good. All the best for the challenge. As per your say, I can imagine the dust storm. The climatic condition will be even more worse when the storm passes.

Thank you very much, I am glad you liked them!

Despite the discomfort and health risks, some people enjoy this drastic change, taking advantage of the opportunity to take unique photographs

I can recall in 2018, there was a similar day here in England. The sky and the light changed, our perception of colours totally skewed. It was due to a double up of Sahara dust in the atmosphere and the forest fires in Portugal and Northern Spain. Particles rising up into the atmosphere and spreading far and wide. It lasted for only seven hours or so before clearing the next day.

So it must be even worse for you being much closer to the source.

I don't know if it is worst but it is for sure annoying. And it lasts a few days every time, for a few times each spring.

Thank you for stopping by @nicklewis :)
