Here you can see some pictures of a cactus which originally come from the American continent where it can be found especially in Mexico, Argentina or Chile and typically it can be found in dry desert areas and this species is probably the golden snake cactus. In the 16th century the first traces of this plant appear in Europe and it was probably mentioned for the first time by the botanist Matthias de l'Obel (1538 - 1616) and in this century the first specimens also appear in Europe and more and more researchers or scientists were fascinated by it and it did not take long and more breeding varieties were created. Nowadays it is particularly popular as a houseplant and interesting is that due to the warm origin it has learned to handle dry conditions very well and to store water well and it can sometimes do without water for a few weeks and there are even examples of cacti that grow in desert areas and can do without water for a few years and of course this always depends on the size of how much water it can store and there are even specimens that can store thousands of liters and are considered absolute survivors of nature. The water is mainly stored in the tubers or the stem and a good rule of thumb when it comes to the right watering is to wait until the substrate has completely dried out and you should be very careful when watering and rather give less than too much and waterlogging should definitely be avoided. Even when it comes to the protection of natural predators, cacti have developed a very intelligent strategy and forms thorns on the bark of the bark and helps to keep enemies away in nature and those who handle a cactus must definitely wear gloves and also from a symbolic point of view it is often seen as a sign of protection, happiness or endurance. Also from a mythological point of view, the cactus is strongly anchored and was used for ritual purposes by some tribes and it is believed that it has already been used for thousands of years for these purposes and the juice of some species was drunk to come into contact with higher worlds. In general, the cactus was often associated with the mythology of some indigenous peoples and in art it has a long history behind it and also in heraldry it can be found in some flags as in the flag of Mexico and there the plant has a particularly high priority.
