Disney is not known for giving things away for free but they did have a comic book published by Dynamite Comics available on Free Comic Book Day. "Disney Villains: Maleficent" #1 was drawn and written by Soo Lee in a very beautifully dark fashion. Very protective of her possessions and castle, Maleficent runs into Reynard while he is about to be attacked by wolf-like creatures. Having betrayed his family, young Reynard is now on the run looking for adventure but isn't too thrilled to be wandering without protection. He practically begs Maleficent for some sort of token to help him on his way.

Reynard is disappointed when she gives him a compass, which he uses to find Maleficent and her castle. While there, he finds her staff and runs off with it. Upon capture, she turns him into a beast very similar to the one that attacked him. She was taken aback that he used her gift of direction against her. However, there is a family that Reynard abandoned who may eventually come looking for him.

This book also advertised some of the other Disney Villains expected to come out with their own issues. These included Cruella De Vil, Hades and Scar. Throughout time, villains have always been more interesting characters than the heroes. And isn't it true that villains aren't all bad. After all, Maleficent did save Reynard at the beginning of the story. I have to wonder though if all of the creatures wandering the forest were once travelers that crossed Maleficent!
