Found Reddcoins! Wallet Backup tips for core qt clients

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago

I'm not recommending reddcoin here but I invested a couple hundred dollars into them a couple months ago and downloaded their core wallet. Somehow the wallet lost it's sync to the blockchain and my 120000 coins disappeared. My digibyte wallet was the same software and I lost those at the same time. My wife guaranteed me that through her prayers I would find them all. I was not convinced; especially after a month of searching forums etc. to try methods of recovery. I wasn't even sure my backup files contained the coins at one point. One tip I did receive that made all the difference was in the naming of the backup file; it must be named right in order to work.

Saturday night I made a blog post about finally finding my digibytes by naming the wallet backup file "wallet" and inserting it in place of the new wallet file I had downloaded. I was pretty sure this backup had my coins because it was 112kb as opposed to the new wallet file which was only 104kb in size. Finding the coins was still an answer to prayer and very exciting. The reddcoins, however, were a different story; all my backups were 88kb and the new wallet files were 96kb in size so I assumed I had backed up an empty wallet. In what I assumed would be another futile attempt I tried the 88kb file and named it "wallet" and this morning my coins showed up after the wallet was fully synced to the blockchain! My wife was all like "I told you so" lol. She is a woman of faith.

A few tips here for anyone restoring their qt client wallet: 1. Name your backup wallet file the same as the wallet file in your new wallet download ie. as of this moment digibyte and reddcoin core wallet files must be named "wallet". I can't speak for other wallets but just check the name (which I will tell you how to find in the following tips)
2.Download a new wallet from the coin website, install it on your computer; here is where some people will say don't let it run yet but I found you must let it start to run or it will not place the necessary wallet file in your app data.
3.You can now go into C: users, owner, app data, roaming, reddcoin (or the relevant coin name). Here you will find the files the wallet needs to operate; delete the file named "wallet" and paste in your back up wallet file correctly named (right click on it and rename if you need to)

  1. Let the wallet continue to sync to the blockcahin and your coins should show up
  2. If the coins do not show up enlist your wife to start praying!
