Ask The Creator - Today with @elenka

in #diyhublast year (edited)
Authored by @elizacheng

DIYHub is a curation initiative aiming to support creators who love crafting, making things from scratch, home & gardening. We have many passionate and talented creators who love sharing their projects and works with us.

This new series is all about these awesome creators. We will have them sharing their experiences in their journey, how they started to get involved with what they love to do now, what are the challenges they face and how they overcome those challenges. And maybe share some tips so we can learn together.

If you have any questions you would like to ask upcoming creators, you are also welcome to drop us a comment here under this post or in our Discord.

How to get featured in one of our upcoming interviews?

  1. Post your creations in the DIYHUB community on HIVE!
  2. Drop us a comment here at this post or you can join our Discord and get in touch with us there.
  3. Make sure to also recommend your friends and artists you follow here on HIVE!

Please welcome our featured creator, @elenka. Elena enjoys crafting, from needlework to jewelry then to sculpting. You can check out her blog to see all her beautiful creations.

1. Please introduce yourself with a few sentences.

My name is Elena. I live in Ukraine. If we talk about needlework, then I have been fond of it since childhood. For as long as I can remember, I have always invented and made crafts from beads and other materials with my own hands. I learned to knit and embroider. More than 12 years ago, I saw a video in which a girl showed how to sculpt rose petals from polymer clay. Then I realized that I really want to try and learn this skill. I watched videos of other sculptors and learned from them. Polymer clay is a unique material from which you can mold almost anything. The variety of products that you can make with your own hands is simply impressive, which is why I like to sculpt. In addition, recently, I began to learn how to make flowers from foamiran and crochet a little.

2. Please explain what your craft means to you.

Sculpting from polymer clay is a very exciting activity that helps to translate your fantasies into jewelry or other products. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a jeweler, but I did not have the opportunity to learn this profession, so my polymer clay jewelry is partly the embodiment and realization of a childhood dream, albeit in a slightly different way.
Also, my knowledge and skills have come in handy more than once in my work with children. For about a year I led a plasticine modeling circle with children 8-12 years old. I really like not only to sculpt myself, but also to teach this to others.

3. What or who inspire you to start crafting?

Often I find inspiration in nature. It seems to me that the ideas that can be taken from observing the world around us will never end, because nature is so amazingly created! For example, I sculpted products in the style of imitation of the texture of wood, metal, fabric, and so on. I love flowers, birds and animals very much, they are also very inspiring. A good craftsman is one who always keeps learning, so I follow the techniques and ideas of other masters to learn something and translate it into my work.

4. Have you ever thought of giving up crafting?

No, I never wanted to leave needlework. On the contrary, I regret that there is not always enough time in my life to bring all my ideas and developments to life. In Ukraine, on February 24, 2022, the war began, which greatly affected the life of my family. Life is getting harder, it is not always possible to afford to purchase the materials needed for needlework. But I do not despair and try to find a positive, even in such difficult circumstances.

5. In which communities do you post and why (except DIYHub)?

I recently started posting my posts in communities. I really like the community "Black And White" and "Photography Lovers" because, besides needlework, I really like photography. Tried posting to a few other communities. In the future, I want to write articles for the «NeedleWorkMonday» and «Сaturday» communities (because I have three cats at home and I have something to tell about them). I also want to write to the Ukrainian community "Team Ukraine".

6. What kind of other content do you enjoy the most on Hive and why?

I really like the atmosphere at Hive, because here you can see a lot of works by talented photographers and other authors. And I am very interested in reading articles about the lives of people in other countries.

7. Please name three users who inspired you during your journey in Hive.

I am very grateful for the support and valuable tips @tali72. She is a wonderful author and an active creative person whose ideas inspire!
I also appreciate @crosheille support for her great NeedleWorkMonday idea. There was a time when I specifically thought about what I would do in order to take part in the relay race on Mondays, and this is a serious creative stimulus.
I also really like the wonderful work of the author @leylar. They inspire!

8. What is your advise to others who would want to start their crafting journey?

I would advise not to be afraid to try something new. There is also no need to be afraid of mistakes and failures, because thanks to the lessons we learn from our mistakes, we can become stronger. It is important to find what you like and do what you love!
Thank you for your attention and wish you all a peaceful sky over your head and inspiration!
