After more than 18 years of running SETI@home and BOINC, I am finally approaching the Three Billion Credits milestone! I am currently at 2.995 billion credits and earning 2.5 million credits per day (through Einstein@home), so less than two days away from The Big 3.

To mark this special occasion properly, I have decided to give away 20 000 Gridcoins to promote BOINC, distributed computing and energy efficient crypto-mining through computational science.

My BOINC statistics on Free-DC. I expect to reach three billion BOINC credits in two days. Gridcoin ad on the left :)

10 000 GRC has already been sent to Gridcoinstats Researcher's Fund. This fund is actually an advanced Gridcoin faucet which allows every new cruncher/researcher on the BOINC network to claim up to 2 GRC (might as well increase it now). 2 GRC is not much, but every little bit helps when you are a newbie.

Another 10 000 GRC will be rained onto GPUGRID crunchers, 16 days from now (on New Year's Eve). Gridcoin rain is an advanced feature implemented in the Gridcoin wallet - any amount of Gridcoins you own can be "rained" i.e. distributed to the crunchers of every whitelisted BOINC project (GPUGRID included), proportionally to their computing contribution (more computations done->bigger average credit->more GRC rained on you). 16 days should still be plenty of time to start crunching for GPUGRID, pump up your RAC and claim your share of the 'rain' on Dec 31.

GPUGRID is a distributed computing project devoted to biomedical research. Thanks to the contribution of BOINC volunteers, GPUGRID scientists at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona can perform molecular simulations to understand the function of proteins in health and disease. Running BOINC on a GPU is a demanding task which consumes considerably more electric power than CPU projects, so GPUGRID crunchers certainly deserve this little bonus.

So there it is - if you want to mine cryptocurrency today, you don't have to run repetitive, wasteful PoW hashing on your PC. You can contribute to science and earn Gridcoins, validating the idea of crypto through scientific progress - something that everyone can relate to. Claim your part of this $1600 reward!

If you don't mind to take this advise: Try not to power up your posts at 100% but rather choose 50/50 option.
For more details you can read here:
https://steemit.com/steem/@bayuya/sbd-vs-steem-how-to-get-more-value

Good advice. I am aware that SBD is spiking, planned to set it to 50/50 and forgot about it. I guess I would have remembered it, if I posted more often.

Congrats to Vortac!

This is an amazing achievement. Distributed mining and Boinc in general is great tasks to run. Gridcoin rewards true research and regular people.

Faucet rewards will increase

Due to this great donation by Vortac, the Faucet rewards will change to 5 GRC for new active researchers, as well as double the rewards per day for active researchers.

At the same time the Faucet will once again open up to everyone to claim coins.

These changes will be made during the weekend.

Thanks again for all you do through gridcoinstats.eu - both with regard to the data you provide and the faucet. It is literally my most visited webpage, and I would hate to navigate the world of GRC without it. <3

Looking forward to your next iteration!

cool!! I should really give a try to mining on Gridcoin.

I'm super excited about GRC and am running BOINC on 3 Raspberry Pis and an Intel laptop, mostly Einstein@Home, TNGrid, Amicable Numbers, and Moo Project. Would love to take part in this giveway! GRC to the moon!

Sounds like you have the right hardware already, based on your project selection. Time to get that RAC building on the laptop. =)

Very cool - Congrats! I'm BOINCing along with Amicable Numbers and Seti, but just have my laptop at night so it will take a lifetime to reach this kind of milestone ;-)

Congrats on your milestone. You've been a long time supporter of the community through various means. Keep up the good work and happy crunching.

Congratulations!

(Out of interest, why GPUGRID?)

Well, it's devoted to biomedical research, so strong humanitarian considerations. Also, it's a GPU project, more expensive to run -> a little extra income will make it more appealing.

biomedical research

The best kind of research, as the impact will affect everyone either directly or through a close friend or family member at some point in their lives.

Congratulations! I've only been Boincing for Gridcoin for about 2 years now. Mostly on World Community Grid. I'm going to have to try GPUGRID now and see if I can score me some sweet airdropped Gridcoin.

You have excellent taste in projects. WCG is fantastic.

Congrats and much respect , you earned it and have the stats to show it! I have been around for that length of time myself too going back pre B.O.I.N.C. and back to the seti@home alpha days with private invites like when gmail beta came out but more elite feeling and far less people and for you to have kept the same user/login to migrate from an openGL only screen saver processing an area around the 3.5mhz RF spectrum averaging 1 WU every few days ( 5-7 that is per WU ) to process 1/100th the current seti@home WU data payload! BOGOMIPS FTW! That is the full time from birth to adult here in the USA , 18 years and I am thinking back to seti@home Y2K! Unfortunately when I learned of Gridcoin I created as always over the past two decades another user in the seti@home user base mucking up the database but wish I could had revived my original or '05 user because it would be really cool to show such a long history of being attached and related to the project('s) and the science of the BOINC/distributed commuting side if things!

P.S : Sooooo , my advise to all of us in Team Gridcoin or for that matter any B.O.I.N.C. user is to update your email address if you drop or change them. When I started most people were still on dialup and yahoo email was the new thing and it was to get away from your ISP (for most people AOL) similar to when Gmail came out and everybody migrated. So update update update! If you ditch the email user under your BOINC projects etc update it to your new address! Although I knew distributed computing was here to stay I had no idea we would be earning money from the work nor that I would be jelly reading a post on steemit from someone who was there when it all started too , just like me! Again congrats and mad respect!

I am still using the same e-mail address as in 1999 when I joined. Irony of it, it was free back then and now I have to pay "yearly subscription" for a mediocre service at best (at least when compared to Gmail). But of course, emotional value outweighs everything else in this case.

Amazing contribution and good choice of project to rain on!

Well Sir@vortac congratulations are definitely in order!!

Thank you for the computations you have done on our behalf and thank you for being an active member of the Gridcoin community we do appreciate you.

I didn't know about the 'rain down' feature, but that seems like an awesome way of getting people interested in it.
Is there an easy way to make that work?

It's actually integrated in the GUI, so quite easy to use.

Go to your wallet, and click Advanced->Neural Network. This will take some time to load, so be patient. At the bottom of the new window, double click the project you want to rain on. A new window will open. At the bottom of this window is a rain interface - enter the amount you want to rain and click the 'Rain' button.

What a generous act! I'm running BOINC on my phone thinking every little thing counts!

An awesome achievement @vortac, and thanks for sharing it and your advice (and yeah, okay, the coins) with the rest of us. I've been crunching for Milkyway@home since the summer entirely due to your advice. I'd point my 7950s at it, but GPUGRID is NVIDIA-only, ISTR..

Glad to have been of help! When I hit 4B credits, I plan to do another rain, favoring AMD users.

Amazing! Thanks a lot for all your contribution to science!

Wow that's an incredible amount of work...
Congratulations and thanks for your community work :D

Congratulations and thanks for your generosity <3

10,000 BTC for a pizza

or

20,000 GRC for science?

Which selfless act of visibility would you prefer? = )

Congrats on the milestone, Vortac, and thanks for the competition!

In ten years, people are going to look back on this event and wonder wtf could possibly have been going through his head to rain the GPD of a small country. =)

They will sigh and say "Such an opportunity, I wish I joined back then" :)

Wow! Respect for this kind act!

Well done @vortac it will be a long time before I get to that level, but I'm in it for the long haul, so who knows.

Congrats!
I haven't tried Gridcoin yet. I didn't build my dream set up yet, so I cannot do crazy cryptographic computation and the like for now. I only have 2 decent servers and one is already used for steem witness so I cannot play too much with it. Maybe Santa will bring me a cruncher this Christmas ;-)

You can also use your Android smartphone or tablet :)

then I have no excuses :-D
I will give it a try before the end of the year

You can literally mine with any hardware that is not an ASIC (as they do no 'useful' computations).

I guarantee you that within 30 minutes you will be comfortably mining from a cold start if you do it through GRCPool. There is a snazzy 10 minute video walking you through the entire process.

To top that off, we are incredibly lucky to have a zero fees pool with an active dev. The only thing you pay for is covering the transaction cost when you withdraw your GRC, which is utterly negligible.

registered! I will ping you guys if I run into trouble.

Congrats on the significant milestone! Not only is that an amazing achievement, but your generosity is sure to draw a lot of newcomers into the scientific fold of the crypto world.

Thanks again for getting me involved. Without your guidance and patience the last 6 months of my life would have been drastically different.

i've been waiting for a worthwhile use of computing that rewarded participants. i'm going to start up with Gridcoin and BOINC... i actually ran Folding@Home & SETI years before BTC was a thing.

Congratulation! You are doing soo much for the Gridcoin community... Thank you, @vortac!

That's cool! I am trying to understand such a scale!
I wish you @vortac a happy Christmas!

Super awesome I love Bionic and all it strives to acomplish I believe it will continue to grow and seriously start shaping the world we live in as we continue to hash out bigger projects.

It's BOINC actually, but I admit Bionic sounds way more futuristic :)

Hi @vortac. how can i earn with gridcoin ?

It's very early where @vortac lives, but allow me to try and help. You earn Gridcoin by contributing to scientific research through the BOINC platform. By far the easiest way to get started is joining the Gridcoin pool - GRCPool. There is a ten minute video on that homepage that takes you all the way from a cold start to a fully functioning research set-up that will earn you GRC. The entire process should take you no more than 30 minutes.

The pool has a very active dev, and zero fees bar the network fee when you withdraw your GRC to your private wallet or an exchange (and that is incredibly cheap).

To earn part of @vortac's rain, you need to be doing work through GPUGrid, which is one of the projects you can choose to contribute to. You are perfectly able to earn your share of the rain through the pool.

If you have any more questions, flick them up on here or any GRC social media and we will try our best to help.

That is very cool to hear you are going do this. What a great way to start the New Year off and boost boinc & gridcoin in 2018. Up voted and re steemed.

Guess that it only works if you crunch on ''solo'' mode, isn't it @vortac?

Looking at the team members list, it looks like grcpool will actually receive the largest amount of the rain. If I am not mistaken, those funds will be then distributed through the pool payout, divided to all crunchers in the pool.

that is correct if I remember correctly anything received as rain or donation gets rained accordingly across the pool users (As I have donated to the pool when I turned solo). I dont know if brain does based on project but if he knows it is coming and u notify him im sure he will rain accordingly as he honors the request of the donation wishes. :)

Thanks, Foggz! Will contact him on Slack.

OMG! I've just realized that GPUGRID is from my University in BARCELONA!!!

Indeed, I thought of the same while writing this article! Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Eddie's hometown :)

hahhahah!!!! Where are you from, mate?

Croatia. 34% of country's BOINC output is mine :)

Screenshot-2017-12-15 Distributed Computing Stats from Free-DC.png

Good work! Hope I would be an early adopter of BOINC!
Anyway, if any time you visit Barcelona just tell me and I will gladly bring you to the GPUgrid home as well as any other good places for lunch!
Cheers

Great! as usual Thanks for everything you do for the community #beyondbitcoin !

Congrats on accomplishment, I only wish I had the computer power you have on hand and thanks for making it rain on the projects.

As an aside

Would you like to buy some t shirts with your excessive pile of grid coin.

I am trying to create a market where people can buy and sell items using ONLY GRC.

Most of us just let it pile up and hope someone wants to pay more for it in the future, some dump it on an exchange for cash but what we really need to do is build a market for it. We need to buy and sell things in GRID COIN (GRC) ourselves.

So I am going to put my money where my mouth is and offer things in GRID COIN (GRC) ONLY.

I am starting simple and I am offering some Thai T shirts payable only in GRC but if it goes well then I can and add other items.

My goal is not to have this pile up in my account. I am hoping that other people will by a T shirt from me, pay in GRC and then you will offer something else online (I don’t care maybe a, Italian T shirt) so I can pay you in GRC. Eventually we could create an entire market payable only in GRID COIN (GRC)

Price for a T shirt is GRC 500 this price includes air mail shipping to anywhere in the world. If you want a shirt them send an email to me at : [email protected]

In the message put your; name, full mailing address (including post code) and what shirt you want. I will send you back a confirmation email with my GRID COIN wallet address and the shirt should ship a couple days after I receive payment.

Right now your options are :
2 Tone RED BULL (Thai) – WHITE with Blue Sleeves
2 Tone RED BULL (Thai) – GREY with Blue Sleeves
Solid Colour (WHITE, BLACK or NAVY BLUE) with the Thai Red Bull

How do you wanna do that?

Hi. How to claim? Is it enough just to writte that you would like to claim?

Not quite. You cannot claim the reward directly. By taking part in doing research work for the BOINC project GPUGrid, you will automatically be rewarded from this 10,000 GRC pool.

More specifically, if on New Years Eve you are contributing 10% of the total work output for GPUGrid, you will receive 10% of the rewards, roughly USD$160 worth of GRC. Although, given the current hype around altcoins and the GRC price increasing, this could be worth far more by then.

amazing @vortac maybe everyone wants to reach that much credit

Very cool. Very generous. Nice work!

What an absolutely awesome thing to do. Nice one!

having said that...no work units currently. Boo!!!

They maintain a zero queue, as each work unit is generated based on the results of a previous work unit. Just keep the project connected, and you will get some WUs.

Ah, makes sense. Started showing up a bit ago, thanks!

Congratulations "Master Shifu*" of the Gridcoin Crypto World... Worth emulating.

Ahan congrats for this
@vortac
Please if u dont mind have look on my black and white photo contest

That's great @vortac. Congratulations!

Good incentive, I just didn't understand - if people stake GRC in their wallet - they can also get rain, or they need to be participants of those particular projects?

To get rain, you had to be on GPUGRID. Or in the grcpool, their share of the rain got distributed to every pool member.

Thanks, I also made comments in your marketing thread, please check if you have time

Good job. well done.
:0)

Could you please donate some grc coins to me so that I can start staking. I am still at zero grc coins.

Here is my grc wallet address

SK1BT572MzHAjKUNnxyQH2SpgPMovwDkpi

I recently started mining grc coins, but I still have not staked any grc coins . The help pages of gridcoin say that someone has to donate grc coins for me to get started.

you can have a look at my activity here
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/home.php

You need about 1000-2000 GRC for serious staking. You should join the pool if you cannot afford to buy that much.
