Apart from Domaine Carneros, we also went to Buena Vista Winery and the city of Sonoma, both of which are located further north.

Buena Vista Winery is the oldest winery in Sonoma and the second oldest in California, having opened one year after D'Agostini Winery.

Agoston Haraszthy, a Hungarian nobleman purchased a ranch in Sonoma Valley in 1857 and named it Buena Vista. He was the first Hungarian to settle permanently in the United States and was often referred to as the "Father of California Wine".

More than 300 varieties of European grapes were introduced to the state by Haraszthy, who also developed new methods for grape cultivation and winemaking. His cellars at Buena Vista Winery were the first stone ones in California .

At that time, many Chinese immigrants who had come to California for the Gold Rush and later for the transcontinental railroad construction were looking for work. Haraszthy hired 150 Chinese workers for his winery through Ho Po, a San Francisco labour contractor. He was also an advocate for Chinese immigration, refusing to stop hiring Chinese labourers at his winery despite growing anti-Chinese sentiment and political opposition.

In Buena Vista's tasting room, I saw photos of Chinese men working in the vineyards and bottling wine. They built roads, cleared land, ripped out old grape vines and replanted European varieties, pruned and harvested grapes, and they dug wine caves by hand...

The original hand-dug caves have been opened to visitors for tours after a reconstruction led by the Jean-Charles Boisset family. They have been the owner of the winery since 2011, and the site still sits on its original property.

We visited the old champagne cellar as well. As you can see from my photos here, Buena Vista made the first sparkling wine in California. It produces wines from cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, merlot, syrah, zinfandel, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, as well as unique historical varietals under the "Vinicultural Society" label.

The city of Sonoma is to the west of Buena Vista Winery. It is a charming town with many historic sites, art galleries, cafes, and shops. It was a great pleasure to stroll through its lovely streets and green parks. Only a few photos were taken because I was having fun with a group of friends.

The Mission San Francisco Solano from the 19th century can be seen below. Thousands of grape vines were planted here, and cuttings were distributed throughout northern California to start new vineyards.

The original Bear Flag was hoisted at the Bear Flag Monument on Sonoma Plaza. The "California Republic" flag features a star, a grizzly bear, and a red stripe. It serves as the foundation for California's modern state flag.
