Nest Building and Breeding of the Great Crested Grebe

This year I didn't have the luck to find the great crested grebes building their nest yet. But exact one year ago I watched them building their nest very close to the edge of a lake and perfect for me to watch and take pictures of them. Since the forest that reached to the edge of the lake gave me some camouflage while watching them. This way I could take some really nice pictures without disturbing them. But this year they might be on a different spot or they havn't started nest building yet. I will further look for them at this spot and hope I can get some great pictures of them this year too.

Spring time is always the best time for some bird photography since they are so much into bonding and breeding that it is easier to get close to them without them fleeing. But still I need to find the corect spots and be there on the right time. I hope this weekend I have some great weather to make a small trip to some interesting destinations.

Very cool! Do you happen to know if the male is always the one who gathers the nesting material or do they take turns?

I don't know for sure but I have seen both, but it is probably one of the main duties for the male.

It's a very interesting division of labour, so I was wondering how specialized it was between the sexes. You're probably right on this.
