🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

I love hearing the songs of these birds in early spring. This means the beginning of real spring. The males arrive first, they look for a territory on which they will feed and nest, and then defend it with the help of songs, thereby indicating that this territory is already occupied.

The females, as you can see, have dull colors in their plumage, and they arrive later, about a week or even two. And the mating season begins.
Chaffinches are polygamous, and after fertilizing one female, the male searches for another. So he lives among several families, takes care of all his offspring.
