FROM 2017: If all the “alternative” media ever does is report on “the news” (as decided by the MSM), then aren’t they just unwitting participants in the mockingbird media system? Join James for this heady thought for the day as he dissects the idea of “the news” and talks about the real value of an outlet like The Corbett Report.

In 1996, I made the decision to leave my Zenith cathode ray TV, with dials for channel changing, behind in a move from one apartment to another. I was offloading stuff bit by bit in preparation for a much longer move and career change down the line and the huge, bulky object that cost money to have (I did have cable TV, back in the day of wired remotes) was simply not with keeping. I never replaced it.

Of course, I did have AOL dial up, and I did see news headlines from the government news sources, but as time went on and I moved to cable, non-curated internet, I stopped going to those government news source websites altogether. A friend of mine is a TV and sports addict, and often our conversations would sound like we lived on different planets if someone were to listen to them. I don't follow sportsball, except for sunday NFL when I watch RedZone and drink with the guys at the bar, I've never seen any popular TV show of the last two generations - Seinfeld, Friends, Survivor, all of the "talent shows", Kardashians, Housewives of rich people, late night talk shows - none. I am a horse racing fan and occasionally a horse is named after a "celebrity" or character or catch phrase from some TV show and someone has to explain it to me.

I'm not anti-information though. I listen to podcasts often, from Glenn Greenwald to David Icke and a lot in between. That's my "news". Occasionally I'll bring up a story that seems to me to be big enough that government news sources may have broadcast at least something tangential to it - something a "world leader" said, proposals to end freedoms - nothing apocalyptic, but "newsworthy", and all I get is a blank stare. It's amazing to me how government news sources can fill their airtime without mentioning even the most minute crumb of information that may really affect someone. I envision "the news" as maybe a long propaganda infomercial, dotted with an occasional arts & crafts segment and of course a lot of gossip about "the rich people". I usually end up smiling and just say "oh, I guess they didn't get that story".
