Grain Run, Barrels, 2 Paragliding Flights, Empty Trailer, Raffle Nano, Apple Tree - Tuesday

in Homesteading24 days ago

I had to wait until after I dropped the boys off at school yesterday morning to head to town for grain. I got to the brewery and had 5 barrels to load into the trailer.

It took about 10 minutes to get them all emptied out and soon I was headed down to the Steam Plant.

This is the last look up at the stacks until another brewer moves in.

I had 9 barrels to load into the truck to take home so they aren't just sitting there.

5 barrels went to the bed of the truck and then 4 got stuffed into the grain and strapped down tight.

Then I drove out to the valley and to the hill to fly. I hiked up to the middle launch and got setup in winds that were gusting and not very constant.

This is where I took off from.

The flight went okay but I just couldn't get myself to stay in any lift. I was watching the eagles floating in the lift but couldn't stick into it myself. I got a few bumps of lifts but in the end it was a sledder down to the bottom of the hill.

I gathered my wing and began to hike up the rock ridge above me, uphill of my wing in the above pic. I got part way up the hill and had a nice bit of wind come up that I thought I might get some lift out of. I did get some and managed a few turns back and forth before I ended up landing again. There really wasn't a constant wind to work with and the gusts were too variable. I called it good with the 2 short flights and headed for home.

It was a bit frustrating to see how amazing the sky looked for flying as I drove home yet knowing how wonky the winds were acting.

IMG_20240507_101238.jpg

Once back on the farm I had to empty the grain which I spread some over the hill along the road in my vain attempt at reducing the weeds.

IMG_20240507_110427.jpg

The bulk of the load got emptied into the sheep pen where they and the birds spent much of the rest of the day wading through.

IMG_20240507_111238.jpg

My 9 barrels are now safely stored along the hangar wall. I may end up using a few for storage around the farm.

In March @silvertackeruk had a raffle which had a Ledger Nano S as the prize which I won and it just arrived yesterday. It's pretty disgusting how long it takes for packages to make it across the ocean, from either side it takes forever. But super stoked on the Nano and have it setup and waiting on the transfer to make it through the mempool. I've wanted a hardware wallet for a long time so this is rather nice to finally have.

We got storm cells that moved through over the afternoon and dropped spits of rain but nothing substantial.

The apple tree actually IS blooming. It's just later than the one by the highway apparently as it is now laden with blooms. I've never seen the trees staggered this much in bloom time in the past 15 years. Kinda curious.

I got dinner made and we watched Outback Crystal Hunters which got my mind going as I have maps of crystal locations in this part of the state. The Aussies have a lot more open land I think to explore but we still have a good amount here in the states. Something else for me to research. We got out to soak before 8 but I was out before an hour.

Today it is cleared up and should be a nice warm sunny day. We are looking at the low 80s this weekend and likely I will be heading south to fly Tekoa with the club, I NEED to get some longer airtime and Tekoa is the place locally to do it. I HAVE to cut the grass today, both mow and weedeat, get the boys to and from school, I have to reseed some things in the garden, then figure out something to make for dinner this evening.

Loading barrels must be one of the most difficult part of your job
Right?

I have a good system that makes it as easy as possible. The setup with the trailer now makes it quite a bit easier than it was when I hauled the full barrels.
