The Magic of Findhorn by Paul Hawken

In the second half of the twentieth century a new universal impulse began to bathe the realm. Humanity and the Earth are now entering into a new age of being. This requires new approaches to life and living that have to be crystallized, grounded and expressed in certain places by relatively small groups of humans before they are disseminated to the wider public. One such places is Findhorn.

The book begins with the journey of an incredulous American to the cold wind swept shores of northern Scotland. Having heard of incredible feats of agriculture such as growing record size plants in sands devoid of nutrients or of fairy tales-like rumors of communicating with elves and nature spirits, the author embarks on a personal journey to discover the truth for himself.

After his arrival the author becomes increasingly aware of the uniqueness of the place, from the nature itself, to the people and the way they interact with each other. What sets them apart is “the glow” which is being referred to on multiple occasions. “What gave them the Glow was their utter cleanliness of mind and body. […] Everyone just sparkled.”

Afterwards we find out more about the history behind the founders of the community: Peter Caddy, his wife Eileen and Dorothy Maclean. We are given insights into what brought them to the point in their lives in which they were able to follow with total faith the divine guidance which was coming through Eileen Caddy.

Following their arrival at Findhorn a while has passed before they received the guidance to start growing their own food. This is the stage in the development of the community during which they gain their initial notoriety while being able to obtain the best nutrition for their bodies. In order to be prepared for entering the new age the human vessel needs to undergo its own transformations for which food that is clean and rich in energy and life is paramount. Divine guidance together with Peter Caddy’s complete trust, determination and a lot of hard work begin to bear fruit in a literal sense. The effect is compounded when Dorothy Maclean begins to interact with what they call the Deva Kingdom. She perceives them “as thoughts, aspects of growth and creation”.

Their little gang of magic makers is completed with the help of Robert Ogilvie Crombie in 1966. He is able to see what is termed “Nature Spirits”: elves, gnomes, fairies and, last but not least, Pan.

This is one of the most beautiful parts of the book that by itself is a worthwhile read for anyone who is interested in the topic of growing your own magical garden in alignment with natural forces.

The last part of the book covers the divine intention behind the ‘Findhorn experiment’. In the coming age, humanity and the planet will be different from how they are today. The changes necessary to arrive there may be too much for many but survival and thriving was proven possible and also quite popular with the visitors, many of them feeling called to remain there.

This is, in our opinion, an experiential and initiatory book for those who feel that there’s void in them which today’s world cannot fill. While it’s not necessarily a call to view Findhorn as THE only truth and way, its story can very much inspire those who are ready to step into their own power and create their own future in any way they see fit or feel inspired. As someone who adheres to the ideas presented in the Ringing Cedars/Anastasia books we found this book to be immersing and complementary, bringing some very important pieces of the greater puzzle of the natural way of living life.
