Do you have that family/relative you've missed so much and dying to meet after several years but circumstances beyond you just make it impossible, I'm sure some of us can relate, probably due to distance, or your tight work schedule makes it difficult for you to have vacation period. Well, both circumstances can be said in my case.

Growing up, I had this favorite uncle, my dad's younger brother, he is my favorite because he adored and cared for me right from when I was a baby, he was a teenager then and lived with my parents who took care of him till he came of age and was fully independent, and also got married and had a baby, still, he adored me, my first year in the university fee was cleared by him and many other times before then. I was in the same first year when he told me about his traveling plans to Qatar with his family, he had gotten a new job offer, which we were so happy about because this was a huge life-changing opportunity for him, but I was sad because I won't get to see him, his wife and my little cousin for a long time due to the distance, she was only one year old when they left and that was almost 10 years back, we still talk and make video calls but it's not like physically meeting them, and I'm still hoping for that visit someday.

My uncle reached out to my dad last week concerning some important documents he needed him to send through a colleague who was traveling back to the same country, the notice was so short, because he just thought about the idea at the late hour, less than 24 hours before his colleague departure from the country, so my mum rushed to the market to get some African food ingredients that can be transported to him as well because he was always telling her he missed her food, then I thought to include a dress for my not so little cousin, I promised to make her a dress whenever she visits Nigeria but since we hadn't the chance yet and there was a way to reach them at little cost, I also hurried to make her this pretty dress, it was rushed, but I made sure to make it beautiful for her, guessing her measurement though from her pictures and also comparing it to the 10 years old measurement I've made dresses for over here.

I started by drafting a simple bodice pattern for both the front and back of the upper side of the dress, turned them with their lining part

  • The base of the dress is a straight skirt pattern, which I also turned using its lining and joined to the upper part of the dress by the waist

  • Next, I gave it a good press and glitter the fabric up with rhinestones after joining the front and back by the sides and added a zipper,

looking at the fabric's pattern, you can also see why I chose this very fabric because I'm trying to pass a message that I love and miss her so much.

  • The more interesting detail of this dress is the pleated hem which I made by cutting a long strip of black crepe fabric in a fold of 6 inches, pleating it around the hem of the dress.

  • I made the sleeves using a puff sleeve pattern, also adding the black crepe fabric as the cuff of the puff sleeve.

I can't believe that I made this dress within such a short while, guess what? The pictures were taken right on top of the car at the airport, 😆 because in my hurry, I forgot to take them at home.

I'm just so happy my little cousin gets to wear a dress made by me tor the first time, and distance didn't have a way of stopping us this time, I wish I had enough time to make more, for now, I'm waiting to see how it fits on her when she sends me a picture, even though she doesn't know yet that I included a special package for her.

It was indeed a fulfilling week with just that one dress made for a loved one.
