3 Paragliding Flights Pic Dump, Racing Rain, Turkeys, Dandelions, Spring Trimming - Tuesday

in Paraglidinglast month

I hope you like pictures because I have a boat load in this post from my flights yesterday morning. I dropped the boys at school and headed straight to the hill. I got there before 8:30 and soon was hiking up to launch.

I headed for my prior launch spot and was there after a 20 minute hike.

It was a good ways down from the top but the wind was funneling pretty nicely into the bowl. On each my hikes to launch I watch a pair of eagles flying overhead. They would wander around a bit then just PARK themselves dead still in the air hovering in one spot as if saying to me, "HEY THE LIFT BAND IS RIGHT HERE!" Then they would fly over to another spot and just hover, reiterating. It was super cool to see exactly where the lift was.

My first flight went off quite well and I managed to get a bit of soaring in.

I got my wing up and then turned and soon was in the air. I got popped up a bit and tried to work my way into the lift bands that the birds had shown me.

I worked down to the rock ridge in hopes of getting a nice buoy from it and managed a bit of lift but not quite as much as I had hoped.

Soon I had a few turns made and then I was on the ground.

I packed my wing up and then hiked back up the hill for another flight. As I got to the launch I looked to the south at Mica peak and saw the bands of snow blowing across it. The weather was starting to move in but I still had time.

I got my wing out, hooked in, got everything on and recording then was soon in the air.

The winds were barely 10mph so I didn't have a ton of lift like the prior day so I had to work a lot more. I headed to the west to the rock ridge again as I saw the birds over it and wanted to give it another try.

I trended my way towards the ridge and got a couple nice bumps of lift, one was in a band that ran up a flat strip on the hill and I tried to turn back into it but fell out of it.

I watched the tree getting hit by the wind and headed for the rocks which gave me a slight bump but only enough to get over the top before I had to head back around the front of the hill.

Swung back across the face and got some good speed up and tried to catch the lift on the other face.

I worked the faces the best I could but ended up falling out of the lift and landed at the foot of the hill right by the trail.

Knowing the weather was moving in I went for one more flight. This time I hiked to the top of the hill where I saw the snow getting closer.

IMG_20240430_095740.jpg

I laid out everything and found myself getting drug around a bit. I had to move down the hill a touch actually launch but ended up in the lee of the lower part of the hill.

IMG_20240430_095746.jpg

I kinda flew and then just kited my wing down the hill to the place I had launched the prior 2 flights. It took a minute to get the wing in the right spot then I managed to get in the air for a real flight. The Garmin image shows the whole flight top to bottom, XCtrack cut the first part off.

I landed on the trail and as I crammed my wing into the stuff sack the first drops of rain began hitting me and my gear. It was coming in fast and I was soon hoofing it back to the truck before I could get drenched.

As I drove across Bigelow I could see the precip falling where I had just been.

Once home I spent the next couple hours getting the data dumped from the flights, got my clothes in the wash, then buzzed my hair off in the spring trimming before a shower. I was done with everything in time to get the boys from school as all the little weather cells floated around the region.

The turkeys are little pigs and the feed tray was just too small for them. It was time for them to graduate to the large feeder which also means I have to fill less often. I expanded their space some more and hopefully in a week or two I can get them into the main coop.

IMG_20240430_150140.jpg

The battle rages on. I spent another half hour digging the dandelions from the yard.

IMG_20240430_160910.jpg

This garden tool is super slick. I step on it and dig it into the ground and the point cuts the tap root of the dandelion which I just lift out of the ground. I have to do them in groups if close or singly for most. Such a pain in the ass/back/etc but it works.

IMG_20240430_160918.jpg

The entire main inner yard is now clear of them, at least all the flowering ones I could see. There are still some buried in the grass that I will find. Next I move out to the rest of the farm where I will try to direct their growing area a bit more. They just spread like herpes so it is easy to get infested.

IMG_20240430_161644.jpg

My stupid skin sucks and I could only soak for less than half an hour. The thick coating of topicals helps a ton though.

IMG_20240430_192702.jpg

Today I would love to go fly again but don't feel like the drive down there. I'll get the boys to and from school, J has running club, the war will rage on across the farm, grass needs to be cut below the house, cleaning around the house and yard as always, then come up with something for dinner this evening.
