Preparing and Gravelling the Garden Beds

Preparing and Gravelling the Garden Beds.jpg

It has been a real flurry of activity in the garden this last week... we had a large concert (well, two concerts...) for our ensemble the previous week and this week was supposed to be a holiday away week... but as it turns out, we had to change our plans a bit and opt for day trips instead. But that has meant that we have had a few hours in the garden every day of the week... and that is allowing us to make some pretty significant (although... only still scratching the surface...) progress on our garden ideas.

First up, was the weeding and then gravelling of the strip along the carpoort with river gravel. It is a bit of a coarse gravel, but it will mean that we are fighting the weeds a little bit less!

... oh, and while I'm near the carport... I also took the chance to replace the floodlights that had blown... the heavy old ones were changed for much lighter LED version. More power efficient... and currently, a lot cleaner!

Along the lavender and tulip garden bed, my wife has weeded it and expanded out the rock border in preparation for the gravelling... but we also wanted to have a stepping stone pathway from the border to the tap. So, my little one helped me choose the stepping stones... and she really wanted this larger flagstone version... so, I said that we could get that as the final step near the tap... after all, it would also help to provide a flat and stable surface for any watering cans that we would be filling.

But these were the smaller ones that she had picked out... sigh, I think I have a weird kid.

Finally, the gravelling reached the end of the carport section... and I removed a dead stump of a bush that had been here for about a year. It was dry and pretty brittle, so it was quite easy to get out. I had hopes that it would spring back to life, but there definitely wasn't any way that that was happening anymore... and so, out it came!

... and we have these birds up in the gumtree dropping debris on us... and just gnawing away at that broken area. Sigh, they make so much grinding noise up there!
