Every Gardener Knows...

The fight against SNAILS!

These slimy little pests have a knack for making enemies out of anyone who loves planting flowers, veggies, or any kind of plant. It’s like their life mission is to:

Make People Angry

It's not that snails are heartless; they actually care a lot... about ruining your day. Their supervillain power? Eating what you love most and multiplying like there’s no tomorrow.

My Position in This War

I'm a pacifist at heart, so this situation is tough for me. I always try to resolve conflicts without anger or violence. I believe that if they can't hurt my feelings, they’ve already lost. In the past, my strategy was to suppress my excitement about planting, giving them no chance to ruin my gardening joy. But that's not a healthy approach. I want to enjoy gardening, anticipation and all.

This time, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to make their quest for destruction harder and save my beloved plants. Planting in raised beds works pretty well. The higher the bed, the harder it is for them to reach their feast. Another experiment, putting containers without a bottom around my plants, was a partial failure as you’ll see in the video. And then I have a greenhouse but that did not hold the snails back to eat my pepper plant and trying to kill my tomatoes.

My Greenhouse

I built my greenhouse without any guidance—just the way I like it. This year, I’ve learned what I did wrong in my initial design and this will be a hopefully good solution to the whole snail problem (at least in my greenhouse...)

Check out the video to see my improvements and cross your fingers for me that this big change will keep the snails out please 💪

My @reward.app experiment

If everything goes well with the @threespeak mobile app and the latest fix by @sagarkothari88 then this post will send >40% of the rewards to @reward.app, and in 7 days, I’ll receive the liquid funds. What will I do with it? Watch the video to find out, but spoiler alert: I won’t be keeping it all for myself!

HiveMeetupAachen (28-29 June 2024)

Cooles Coverbild!

Dankeeee ich hab da fast länger dran gearbeitet als an dem Video und Text zusammen :D

Mit Erfolg! 👍🏻

I once saw a report about professional snail breeders. To prevent the snails from escaping outdoors, they covered the breeding facility with a very thin and small layer of fat (frying fat). 5 centimeters should be enough. The snails cannot move on this layer. If you put a thin layer of fat on the outside of the buckets, your peppers should be safe.
It works for me.

Ohhh yeah thanks! I tried a product called "Schnexagon" in the past that worked as well. But one downside is the smeary layer that also bugs me when I touch it haha
Doesn't fat stink after some days in the sun?

I wipe around the plant pots once with a greasy paper towel and that's it. I do this once a week because springtails and woodlice eat away at the layer. Nothing smells at all.
