Mundane Life | Visiting A Contemporary Art Exhibition At GMBB Creative Community Mall, Kuala Lumpur

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY4 months ago

Last October, I went to a contemporary art exhibition named Telur Pecah 3.0. Even though it happened a while ago, I'm just now sharing it on HIVE. Telur Pecah means broken egg, and it was the third time they had this exhibition, so that was why they called it Telur Pecah 3.0.

The objective of this exhibition was to support independent visual artists and connect Malaysians with local art. This was the third time they held such an event, and it was the largest one yet, featuring more artwork per artist than before.

Despite being an artist myself, I wasn't really tuned in to the local art scene. Being a busy mom, I don't always have the time to keep up with such news. It's a bit of a bummer, but we can't always be aware of everything around us, right? 🤷‍♀ I learned about the exhibition from a friend who was showcasing one of her sculptures.

The exhibition lasted for a month, and I had to clear my schedule to attend because the venue was in the city center, requiring me to travel quite a distance.

The exhibition took place at the GMBB Creative Community Mall in Kuala Lumpur's central business district. Before my visit, I did a quick research on the venue and was surprised to discover that one of my artist friends had a studio there. Besides checking out the exhibition, I planned to stop by her studio to say hello.

Emila Yusof is a children's book illustrator and author from Malaysia, well-known for her whimsical illustrations. You can find some of her books on Goodreads. Luckily, her studio was on the first floor of the mall, and I was fortunate to find her there that day. We had a nice chat, and I congratulated her on being nominated for the prestigious 2024 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) in Sweden. The winner will be announced on April 9 later this year, and I'm really hoping she takes home the prize! Even so, she mentioned that being nominated was already an incredible honor, and I completely agreed.

We took a nice photo together in her studio.

I also bought a couple of books and art prints from my friend during my visit.

I took my time to explore the mall and the exhibition, visiting some of the artist studios. Unfortunately, some artists weren't there, but I had a pleasant chat with those who were, including this artist, Alice Yee.

I visited another artist's studio, Jid Kay Artworks. The artist, Jid Kay, whose real name is Yazeed Kayoom, is also a resident artist for Petronas (Malaysia's petroleum refineries company). When I dropped by his studio, he was busy working on a large painting. I was attracted to his artwork because he used colors similar to the ones I often use in my drawings and paintings. We had a nice chat but unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo with him 🤦‍♀

I purchased two art prints from Jid Kay. He had some adorable products, including tiffin carriers, but unfortunately, they were beyond my budget 😂.

Here are two of the studios I checked out but as I mentioned, the artists weren't around when I visited. Regardless, I had a fantastic time appreciating their artworks. My top pick was a section dedicated to artists with disabilities. I was truly amazed by their talent and the childlike approach they brought to their art. I would love to purchase some of their work on one of my future visits.

I visited many more studios but I didn't include the pictures here.

I took pictures of some of the exhibited paintings but they were hundreds of them so it's impossible to share everything here.

After coming back from the exhibition it gave me idea on what I could do this year. As many of you know I don't really paint on canvas but after visiting this exhibition I felt inspired to try my hand on canvas painting. And maybe, my paintings could be exhibited here too?

From what I observed Malaysians generally don't really appreciate visual art, which I find unfortunate because there are so many talented artists in this country! But then again, I could be wrong. Anyway, one of my goals this year is to stay updated on the local art scene so I can immerse myself more in it. And maybe, just maybe, I could be one of the names you see on these exhibition walls someday 😃

That's it for now. If you read this far, thank you. I appreciate it so much! Kindly give me a follow if you like my content. I mostly write about making art, life musing, and our mundane yet charming family life here in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

The artworks look so amazing and unique, I have never been to this kind of exhibit, so I am looking forward to seeing myself walking in this kind of event :)

It was a great experience and honestly, paintings should be observed in person to see the textures and the actual colors.

I never visited an art exhibit before, but I guess visiting one is a good idea because you can able to see and appreciate different artworks. 🙌

By the way, the artworks looks amazing!

If you get the chance, consider visiting one. Paintings are best appreciated when seen in person.

People who really love and do arts will surely love visiting art exhibit too and I'm glad you enjoyed it and met some of the artists.

Honestly speaking, I haven't been to any art exhibition but I would love to visit one someday. I am considering an art gallery with historical and contemporary arts even though I am not an artist myself. These arts look really creative! 🖼️

Yeah you should pay a visit someday 🙂. I visited some exhibitions before this but I often felt intimidated by the scale of the paintings and generally I find art galleries are fully of art snobs, which made me shunned most exhibitions. I rather support unknown artists, or folk artists.

Yeah, I am planning to visit one this year.

I can’t wait to see your painting exhibited at an art gallery soon.
I’m really looking forward to it.

Thank you. It won't happen so soon though but if the opportunity arises in 2025, I'll go for it.
