Something to keep in mind about adopting puppies

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY28 days ago

This is something that we attempt to warn all would be adopters before they go all in on getting a dog. Obviously we are very happy when a potential adopter comes along but believe it or not it is actually worse for a dog to get adopted and then returned or even worse, abandoned a second time, than it is for them to not be adopted at all.

Don't give them hope and then just give up on them.

We do background checks on the people that are adopting, not too intrusively but we really try to make sure that they are serious about adopting and are not going to just run away when things get tough. People generally have an incorrect idea about what having a dog is like because they see funny and cute Instagram posts where the dogs are just being obedient and compliant in everything. Naughty dogs don't end up online for the most part and here's something that everyone needs to know: Almost all dogs, with very rare exceptions, are "naughty dogs" whose behavior has to be refined to suit your life. It is a long road and many people think they are up for it, but are wrong.

There is a very good chance, almost a guaranteed one, that when left alone, which you will have to do at some point, that your dog is going to tear up your stuff regardless of how many toys you bought for it. This is a normal part of a dog growing up goes through and only through tremendous patience and perseverance will this behavior change.

Here is a funny sign that someone at another animal-welfare clinic made and we have copied and put on the wall of our own establishmentbecause it is true.

While certain breeds react differently, this is a very good rule of thumb. Before 4 months dogs are too small and dependent on your undivided attention to really cause any damage. They don't know how to use the bathroom correctly at this point but you don't really mind because it isn't a big mess. The terrible two's as bad as they are for humans are likely worse with dogs. Children have an attitude at 2 years of age but at least they aren't generally capable of mass destruction. A dog can tear apart almost anything at that age and sees nothing wrong with doing so.

Generally speaking, with a certain level of attention paid by the owner, after 2 years of age most dogs have come to an understanding of what they are and are not allowed to do and are pretty good from that point forward. Again, a LOT of this depends on the tenacity of the owner. If you work with a dog it will learn, if you just let the dog run wild, it will run wild all of its life.

So please keep this in mind when considering adopting a puppy. Sometimes it can be a better idea, especially if it is your first time owning a pet, to get a dog that is already a few years old because they tend to be calmer. Sure puppies are cuter but trust me as someone that has raised hundreds of dogs, those 20 months near the start can be an absolute terror and this is why so many adoptees end up bailing on the entire process.

In my very neighborhood there is a female dog that gets knocked up every year and then has 3-4 puppies. The puppies get handed out to anyone that wants them and normally 1 or 2 stay behind. The tragic thing is that these younger animals just one day aren't there anymore. Since the dog meat trade is alive and well in this country I am pretty sure that is where they ended up.

Someone I know has offered to the people that own "mama dog" to pay to have her sterilized but they refuse. Sometimes I wonder if they are selling the pups into the meat trade on purpose and that, would be absolutely heartless and terrible.

that is absolutely awful. Here in Thailand the dog meat trade is technically illegal but I have heard rumblings that it still takes place in very remote areas in Isaan. It isn't a widespread thing at all though.

That's really wonderful, making sure first the the people that'll adopt a dog is trustworthy or a real dog lover. If we just handed them out to those people who think that dog is just cute and cute, then there's really a big chance that they will get abandoned, once again, that's the sad truth. But if we are responsible by making a little effort to look for a new home for the cuties and naughty pups, then we'll avoid them getting hurt. That's whats mom do whenever our dog gave birth, she only handed them to those she knows. To give those pups a lovely life. 💓

Yes, we really do not want people to make this choice because they think the dog is going to be a quiet angel all the time just because the puppy is sleepy when the people come to visit. Once they hit 4 months they are wild and full of energy and the owners need to be very prepared for this.

We adopted two cats and our lives were changed. They are a great companions for us and each time that we see some cats being shared online that is for adoption we hope that someone will pick them up.

I can agree with the screening procedure it is important to have it as pets needs someone that can take care of them in their needs. Kinda disappointed with people adopting because the pets are cute or will be given to their special someone :(

Thank you for contributing to the better life of animals that otherwise wouldn't have a home. We need many more people like you in the world! Can I see a pic of your cats if it is convenient for you to do so?

Surely here they are.

A parrot is far worse because they have their terrible two's and live for 60 years plus. I get upset when I see people I know get puppies and end up not following through and when you see them again have another puppy.

Yes, i have heard this about parrots and other birds as well. The social media trend of parrots and other exotic birds doing cute things has likely resulted in an increase of people buying these pets only to discover that it is a lot of work and this bird is very capable of hurting you badly as well.

do you have a parrot? can I see?

Will take some new photos this week. Was just checking and the ones I have are all old ones.

Will take a photo later. Max is an African Grey.
