Louisville isn't so much one town as it is multiple coinciding ones. There's the Louisville that the locals know and then there's the Louisville that the tourists know. There's also the forgotten Louisville that nobody really knows or goes to without good reason.
Paid a visit to the latter this past Friday. The week before I'd been taking an alternate route to avoid the clusterfuck that is Kentucky Derby traffic and spotted this derelict auto parts place that reminded me of Route 66 and I had to get back to it. The other end of the block had a early to mid-20th century neighborhood feel to it but by the time you got to this end it'd taken on a distinctly industrial character.
Couple blocks further on down the street the culprit was revealed, the Louisville International Airport. This used to be more neighborhoods but it got razed to expand what is now the second busiest airport for cargo in the US.
Still researching the history of this area so I'm not 100% certain I've got my geography right but I think this was once Highland Park. Seems the houses had to go but they let some of the industrial stuff stick around.
RIP Highland Park. Now the city of UPS Worldport stands in its place. They're a bit pickier about who they let in nowadays, seems the Department of Homeland Security takes their 'No Trespassing' kind of seriously.
For some strange reason I didn't see another pedestrian the entire time I was out wandering. Did see a car scrapping place so I guess it balances out. Hadn't realized any of this was here before I went wandering, now I'm wondering how many Louisville natives even know about it.
Can you hear this photo? That particular sound of broken glass on concrete underfoot? They found someone shot to death on the railroad tracks beneath this overpass less than 24 hours after I took this, which could explain the lack of foot traffic.
That's enough forgotten Louisville for one day, so I'll leave you with this I Spy window display. Or whatever you call that arrangement.
I suppose all cities have these forgotten areas. Even in my little hometown whole neighborhoods have disappeared for expansion. The street where several of my friends grew up no longer exists. All the homes have been torn down and now it is part of the sports complex for the High School.

For sure. I'm going back to my hometown for Memorial Day weekend, should be interesting to see how much it's changed. Perhaps forgotten is the wrong word, couldn't come up with the right one when I was writing and used it as a sort of placeholder but your comment made me think of what I was looking for, liminal space.
