“Prayers to Eternity” is the title of a book I edited in 1996 about statuary and public art, one of the subjects I most enjoy photographing. From this book I share the text “The stone, the bronze and the look” by Carlos Santarém Andrade.
“Carved in stone, modeled in bronze, statues pontificate in squares, rise in gardens, adorn buildings.
The artist fixed the gesture, surprised the attitude, portrayed the personality. Time has given them patina and rot, the habit of robbing them of their function. And the men pass by, with the everyday indifference of their routine. But there is always a new way of seeing, of looking. And this look, established at an unforeseen angle, in a unique setting, gives us a different vision.
And things come back to life, take on a new shape, new movements. And this is what is given to us by Paulo Abrantes’ lenses.
A new reading of the old statue, of the tiredly seen bust, of the more than familiar image. And they appear to us revived, they speak another language to us, they are renewed in their attitudes. “Preces à Eternidade” é o título de um livro que editei em 1996 sobre estatuária e arte pública, um dos motivos que mais aprecio fotografar. Desse livro partilho o texto “A pedra, o bronze e o olhar” de Carlos Santarém Andrade.
“Esculpidas na pedra, modeladas no bronze, as estátuas pontificam nas praças, erguem-se nos jardins, adornam edifícios.
O artista fixou o gesto, surpreendeu a atitude, retratou a personalidade. O tempo deu-lhes a patine e o carcomido, o hábito roubou-lhes a função. E os homens passam, com a indiferença quotidiana do vai-vem da rotina. Mas há sempre um novo modo de ver, de olhar. E esse olhar, fixado num ângulo imprevisto, num enquadramento singular, dá-nos uma visão diferente.
E as estátuas revivem, adquirem nova forma, novos movimentos. E é isso que nos é dado pela objectiva de Paulo Abrantes.
