Some animals take on the color of their surroundings to camouflage. It's safer that way.
But it looks like some mushrooms do that too. Intentionally or not, they are so hard to spot that if I didn't stop and look at the tree above them, I would not notice there were so many.
And they were not even that small. If the fallen leaves had any other colour, or there were no leaves at all, I would be able to see them from a distance.
Can you see how many of them there are? It took me a while to realize that it was a large group of probably over 15 mushrooms. And I still think there might have been many more hiding under the leaves. I did not check that, as I did not want to disturb them.

As I look at the photos now, I start to like all the fall colours more than the mushrooms. So pretty!
Two bonus shots. The colours of that last fall were amazing. The sunny day and all the dry leaves on the ground were like a dram. A few little plants were still trying to grow and enjoy the warmth before winter showes up.

How great to see a fungus that has the ability to camouflage itself in the environment and go unnoticed along with the leaves of its environment. I can't believe that you found 15 mushrooms in that colony.

Fungus Chameleonus did such a good job that even google did not know that name :D
Well, I think I might be for sure miss them when I am out hunting, they were just the same color as the fallen foliage. are they edible?

Most of the time they are easier to spot, I admit :)
It is very difficult to see them, especially among these leaves. Sometimes we used to go mushroom foraging with my family and my parents are very good at it. I am a beginner :P
I love mushrooms picking! Even though I am only certain about two or three types and would not pick the rest.
