A Sip of Self

Most of my colleagues here probably think I am very introverted. When I think of the many parties that I didn't go to with them, I totally understand why they would think that way, but my reasons are simple. One of them is that they never have the drinks I want, and the drinks they have slow me down.

No. No one could actually force me to take drinks that I do not want. In the past few months, however, I thought to loosen up a bit and see what the fuss was about certain drinks. What I found was, hmm, rather reaffirming.

You see, there once was a time that I was addicted to soda. I would drink two or three bottles each day and continue that way for a long time. I was young, so the only thing I suffered was anxiety, but it thankfully wasn't anything severe. It only makes sense to get addicted to something so sweet and chilling, especially when served cold. On the other hand, for me, enjoying alcohol doesn't exactly add up.

Most of the beer and alcohol drinks I have taken have something in common; they give me this awful burning sensation and sometimes unappealing aftertaste when I take them. I never feel like I want another shot.

At a party, I thought to see if this repulsion I feel for alcohol was just in my head, as most of my colleagues took it as a normal thing. And so I drank a little more that night. Perhaps more than others at my table.

I felt perfectly fine until I had to keep telling people that "I'm perfectly fine" each time they asked me, "Jay, are you sure you're okay?" Next thing, I was dancing, only to watch the video the next day, cringing at my Grammy-winning dance steps.

Since that night, I no longer do more than myself. I found what I was looking for - that alcohol sure isn't for me. It just makes me feel way less of myself. And being a proactive person, feeling slow and lethargic makes me underperform, and that vexes me. No Eureka moment, and, even worse, I could misbehave if I do get high. Besides, alcohol is generally not appealing to my taste buds.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is coffee. I cannot begin to tell you how I prefer to smell the scent of hot cocoa and milk, the sizzling heat of coffee brewed with passion surging through my blood vessels, and the rejuvenating sensation I feel.

As many of us know, caffeine boosts alertness. Starting with a nice cup already makes the morning feel like a good one with how it makes me feel. And being a proactive person, coffee helps in one way or another. Comparing it with alcohol, I'd rather choose something that is a boon to my welfare and efficiency over a bane, picking one or the other.

Speaking of coffee, would it be a good idea to drink coffee now at 12 a.m.? Cravings heightened. Might as well sip something that nice as I watch this film. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

Hot cocoa and milk is a marriage worth celebrating a good morning. 12 AM coffees are deadly and delicious 🤤 some can’t keep their caffeine down and it ruins good sleepy nights. Tho some aren’t affected by it. It all depends on how your body reacts to late night coffees. Hope you do figure it out soon. ☕️

🤓 Marriage worth celebrating indeed.

We all react differently to coffee, actually. While some may say that coffee keeps them up, coffee could actually induce sleep for me sometimes. What about you? And when last did you have a nice cup of coffee?

Haha, you know you weren't fine when you had to tell people you were fine, that part cracked me up, coffee is a nice beverage as its benefits are numerous. Great post!

😁 I was already a bit tipsy at that point. Lol

Thank you, Amie.

I definitely choose coffee over alcohol any day of the week or on any occasion. The feeling of being out of touch with yourself that alcohol brings is kind of scary to me, I always prefer to be in control of what I say or do :)

That's another way to put it—scary. Control of ourselves is precious. Coffee gives more of that than alcohol. How often do you take coffee?

Ah, I rarely drink coffee. It's not much of a vibe for me.

I see. Well, that's alright.

I cannot begin to tell you how I prefer to smell the scent of hot cocoa and milk, the sizzling heat of coffee brewed with passion surging through my blood vessels, and the rejuvenating sensation I feel.

Same! I prefer a cup of coffee to most other things other than water.

Yes! Water is incomparable, actually. It's mostly a need than want for everyone.
