Yesterday, I had an exam to write. As an evening student, I also write my exams on Saturdays, unlike the regular students. And on my way, I came across an old friend of mine. This guy was one of my mates from our ND days. We had been on the same block in the Boys Hostel and we used to gist a lot back then.
However, once we got to ND2, majority of us left the hostel and went to stay off campus. So, I lost contact with a lot of them. Seeing him again after all this time brought back a lot of memories, and there was a lot for us to talk about, but because I had an exam I was going to, I couldn’t spend as much time as I wanted with him. And eventually, we had to part ways with the promise to reconnect once the exam was over.
Why am I bringing this up? It was because of one fact I noticed about our meeting. I remembered this friend of mine and I remembered everything about him. I can remember the room he stayed in and his roommates. I remember the times I went to his room to take garri and sugar, or when he came to mine to ask for pure water. That’s just to tell you how close we were back then.
But do you know the one thing I didn’t remember? His name! Yeah, I didn’t remember his name, and since then I’ve been thinking about it, trying to remember what it was and truth be told, I can’t remember ever knowing this guy’s name. The same way I’m pretty sure he never really knew my name. Yet, we had been close enough to do a lot of things together. How was this possible?
It’s that thing we guys have, where we can be really close without knowing much about each other. Even back then, a lot of us referred to each other as “Chief”, “Senior Man”, “Oga”, and even “Boss”. It’s often seen as a sign of respect even though the person has done nothing to warrant these titles. And then, just as you’re calling them these titles, they’ll be calling you something similar as well.
And when you have all these titles to pick from , why would you need their names? It’s funny how someone can be your gee, but you won’t even know some basic things about them like their birthdays and other things. They have to remind you of their birthdays or you’re going to forget. It’s as simple as that.
I guess that as men, we just don’t care about such things. Personally, I only know the names of my closest guys. Every other guy is either “Boss” or “Chief” to me. That’s why if you go to a crowded street in Nigeria and call out “Senior Man”, almost every guy there will turn. But the one you’re calling will know that it’s for him. It’s just like everyone shares the same group of names and that makes life so much easier.
This is something that I’ve become a bit accustomed to. I don’t see anything wrong with it. It just crossed my mind because of my friend and how I had to think long and hard about his name. Even when I saw him yesterday, it was still “Senior Man” that I called him and he called me “Boss”! I guess, boys will always be boys.
Friends are very special if you meet them even after a long time, you get a lot of happiness, a lot of old memories are shared, a good time is spent.

An interesting thing to write about, I myself sometimes forget the name of some of my friends but call them "bro" and this covers everything for me.. no need for name.. yeah.

Hehe. What should I say? You forgot his name even once you were close to each other. In my case, I forget the face easily but not the name. I forget the name of someone If I am not so close to that person. Whatever, sometimes it happens. I believe you can remember the name if you put pressure on your brain.
Hehe... It seems were opposites. I can't forget a face that easily. I might forget everything about you, but once I see your face, I'll know it's a familiar one. And I won't stop thinking of it until I remember where I saw that face. Faces stick to me for longer than names do😴
The way some guys relate ehn, you’d think they’re very close only for you to realize that they don’t even know their names, lol

For some guys if you you don't have any money relationship with them, forget.
Anyways I've experienced this, trying to remember that name and it would seem as if I never knew it
