Water is a main resource of life on our planet, and like all living beings we humans need it to survive. It is crazy to learn that different countries have different access to potable water. In some countries, you need to walk kilometers to get water from a water well, which usually isn't treated water while in others you can just grab the water directly from your tap in your house. So we need to know the origin of that water and what we need to do with it so we can drink it safely. We don't want our family to get sick with a parasite or intoxicated with a non-digestable chemical element. I can tell at least that I had different experiences in both countries where I lived: Brazil and Canada.
I just came from Brazil last week for a visit and I guess nothing changed in people's culture with potable water in Rio de Janeiro. I heard that nowadays, the city is doing a good job treating the water and in theory, anyone can drink the water directly from the tap there. However, I noticed that people aren't still confident about it. A couple of years ago the water reservoir had problems and the water with Geosmin. Geosmin isn't toxic, but it has a strong odor and taste, and it stinks a lot. At that time people started to buy bottled mineral water to avoid the water coming from the tap even people that had tap filters. I wasn't living there anymore, but my parents told me about this problem and I read a bit too. Anyways, using water filters has been a common practice there, since I was living there. One of the first concerns that I had when moving to a new apartment was to always check the possibilities of installing water filters. In my first apartment, I had a small tap filter in my kitchen. In the second apartment that I lived in, I installed those separated water filter devices that had also a cold water dispenser as well. So it is going to take some time for Rio's population to trust the water from the tap. I just saw that at the beginning of this month, the water company had some problems in some locations, since part of the reservoir was contaminated with Touluen, which is very toxic and causes cancer. Even if the company is doing a good job, industries and the population around don't help a lot.
In Canada, I lived in two different cities in different provinces. In both places, the water in the tap is potable. The only difference is that Moncton is one of the few cities in Canada that doesn't add fluoride to water, while Lethbridge does that. Fluoride is a chemical that is added for dental purposes. Dentists and some researchers defend that adding fluoride to the water prevents cavities and tooth decay in the population. While others prefer to criticize and say that it is toxic. Well, the water in Rio de Janeiro also has fluoride. Anyway, I drink it from the tap. The bottle beside my bed has the water that I get from any tap from my home. However, I have also a water filter in my home. My refrigerator has a water dispenser that brings always cold water that goes through a filter. My wife prefers that water since has less taste than tap water. The tap water has some minerals so we can say that it has a taste. I got used to this water so I feel that the filtered water is not so good to drink.
So despite where we live, we need to be very cautious about the water quality. I always ask how is the water when I am visiting a different place. Water is the healthiest drink that we can digest because we need that, despite of that some times I drink more coffee than water during the day. So, we need to take care of ourselves and our family with good quality water.

Posso dizer pelo menos que tive experiências diferentes nos dois países onde vivi: Brasil e Canadá.
Acabei de voltar do Brasil na semana passada para uma visita e acho que nada mudou na cultura das pessoas com relação à água potável no Rio de Janeiro. Ouvi dizer que hoje em dia, a cidade está fazendo um bom trabalho tratando a água e, teoricamente, qualquer um pode beber água diretamente da torneira lá. No entanto, notei que as pessoas ainda não estão confiantes quanto a isso. Há alguns anos, o reservatório de água teve problemas e a água estava com Geosmina. A Geosmina não é tóxica, mas tem um odor e sabor fortes e cheira muito mal. Naquela época, as pessoas começaram a comprar água mineral engarrafada para evitar a água da torneira, mesmo aquelas que tinham filtros de torneira. Eu não morava mais lá, mas meus pais me contaram sobre esse problema e eu também li um pouco. De qualquer forma, o uso de filtros de água tem sido uma prática comum lá, desde quando eu morava lá. Uma das primeiras preocupações que tive ao me mudar para um novo apartamento foi sempre verificar as possibilidades de instalar filtros de água. No meu primeiro apartamento, eu tinha um pequeno filtro de torneira na minha cozinha. No segundo apartamento em que vivi, instalei aqueles dispositivos de filtro de água separados que também tinham um distribuidor de água gelada. Então, vai demorar um pouco para a população do Rio confiar na água da torneira. Acabei de ver que no início deste mês, a empresa de água teve alguns problemas em algumas localidades, já que parte do reservatório estava contaminada com Tolueno, que é muito tóxico e causa câncer. Mesmo que a empresa esteja fazendo um bom trabalho, as indústrias e a população ao redor não ajudam muito.
No Canadá, vivi em duas cidades diferentes em províncias diferentes. Em ambos os lugares, a água da torneira é potável. A única diferença é que Moncton é uma das poucas cidades no Canadá que não adiciona flúor à água, enquanto Lethbridge faz isso. O flúor é um produto químico adicionado com fins dentários. Dentistas e alguns pesquisadores defendem que adicionar flúor à água previne cáries e deterioração dos dentes na população. Enquanto outros preferem criticar e dizer que é tóxico. Bem, a água no Rio de Janeiro também tem flúor. De qualquer forma, eu bebo da torneira. A garrafa ao lado da minha cama tem a água que pego de qualquer torneira da minha casa. No entanto, também tenho um filtro de água em minha casa. Meu refrigerador tem um dispensador de água que sempre traz água gelada que passa por um filtro. Minha esposa prefere essa água, pois tem menos sabor do que a água da torneira. A água da torneira tem alguns minerais, então podemos dizer que tem um sabor. Eu me acostumei com essa água, então sinto que a água filtrada não é tão boa para beber.
Portanto, não importa onde vivemos, precisamos ter muito cuidado com a qualidade da água. Sempre pergunto como está a água quando estou visitando um lugar diferente. A água é a bebida mais saudável que podemos digerir porque precisamos dela, apesar de que às vezes bebo mais café do que água durante o dia. Portanto, precisamos cuidar de nós mesmos e de nossa família com água de boa qualidade.

Aqui em Goiânia onde moro acho que nunca tivemos algum problema tenso em relação a água, então posso dizer que tive sorte nisso, uma vez ou outra o fornecimento é interrompido por conta de manutenção ou algo assim, mas quase sempre temos a agua potável e de boa para beber.
