I took a visit to the swamp to spy on all the turtles sunbathing on fallen logs.

This year we have a bumper crop of turtles, there must be a few hundred in this little swamp area.

I usually have to sneak really slowly through the bushes so they won't all slide back into the muck.

Log real estate is so sparse that some have to go the duplex route.

I'm sure the turtle on the bottom is not too thrilled about having another one block his sun.

This robin was observing the weird turtles below as it started warming up for the day in the sun.

At the larger lake the two goose families brough out the babies to do a bit of sunbathing and grass munching.

After a while it was naptime. That's enough sun for now.

There used to be an indigo bunting on this strange tree burl but right as I snapped the photo it was gone. The tree kind of looks like a deformed face so I kept the photo. Maybe next time I can at least get a squirrel sitting on the strange formation.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Sort:

Never seen so many turtles warming up, awesome photography with bird life also unusual tree bark.

Quite a few are out this year. Soon they will get to gorge on the 12 year cicadas that are about to hatch everywhere.

Cicadas really let you hear their presence, also difficult to see them, when they come up it's time to hunt under every leaf of plants !LOLZ

We have the 12 year guys hatching now and they do so in swarms. So many its impossible to not step on them underfoot.

So the ones you get are not shy !LOLZ

Ours mimic lichen, blend in although they are about 5cm big, extremely shy, the minute you move they go silent. With 140 cicada species in South Africa, 38 approximately in our province alone they are not easy to photograph, so well done....

Yeah our annual cicadas are like that, shy fast and green. These 12 year guys just have sheer numbers and are black w orange wings and just cover everything. Brute force strategy vs hiding strategy.

Some lie dormant till right weather approaches, they sure know patience!

My cat is so impatient?
He always wants everything meow.

Don't comment about Yertle the Turtle. Don't. Stop.

I failed. I was envisioning a traffic jam... especially in that first photo but then you showed stacking turtles 🤦

I have to try and get that dr. Seuss book for my daughter.
