I understand that for Americans, European cities have another dimension, that is to say, a magic that unites history with the different artistic styles through which this continent, which is much older than the one we inhabit, has passed.
Cities like Paris, London, Rome, Athens, Madrid, will always be very attractive for any tourist.
But few people talk about Edinburgh, which is the second most visited city in the United Kingdom after London.
An old city, with an impressive castle and other historic buildings made of volcanic stone, from the same hills where these buildings are located.
What strikes the lens of the American traveler visiting Edinburgh of the Seven Seas on the Scottish Coast?
With two souls
European newspapers have confirmed that Edinburgh is the Scottish capital that has two souls:
A medieval city and a new city with incredibly beautiful gardens, such as those on Princess Street.
In fact, it is said that in the city the distances are very short, and that the castle, as well as the cathedral, are very striking monuments to the tourist.
The old city
It has preserved a medieval structure, with buildings of the Protestant Catholic Reformation.
There is its cathedral and many museums, such as the Royal Museum of Scotland; and also, the University of Edinburgh.
In the so-called old town, its population has dropped significantly, to be only about 20,000 inhabitants, approximately, today.
Literary and tombs...
Visiting Edinburgh is not very frequent for American tourists, at least the Latin ones; however, the atmosphere and its tourist plans, will allow you to live unforgettable moments.
Edinburgh is considered the city of literature, the city of festivals, and museums and art galleries abound everywhere.
There, you may feel like you are living part of Stevenson's famous novels, and the darkened sky, the narrow streets and legends such as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, walk by your side as if they were shadows.
Likewise, we cannot forget the father of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was also born in Edinburgh.
Not forgetting "The Elephant House", the coffee shop where J. K. Rowling wrote the first of the Harry Potter novels.
And because this city has been home to great writers, it is why it has been considered the first UNESCO city of literature, along with Melbourne in Australia, Dublin in Ireland, Granada, Prague and Montevideo.
Shadows and ghosts...
Its gloomy cemetery, together with the imposing castle, will make your imagination fly to unsuspected limits.
So, as we have been told by other tourists from other parts of the world, Edinburgh has something that binds, that attracts and exudes beauty, which allows us to name it, the Jewel of Scotland.

Comprendo, que las ciudades europeas para los americanos, tienen otra dimensión, es decir, una magia que une la historia con los diferentes estilos artísticos por los que ha atravesado este continente que es mucho más viejo que el que habitamos nosotros.
Ciudades como París, Londres, Roma, Atenas, Madrid, siempre serán muy atractivas para cualquier turista.
Pero pocas personas hablamos de Edimburgo, que es la segunda ciudad más visitada del Reino Unido después de Londres.
Una ciudad vieja, con un impresionante castillo y otros históricos edificios hechos con piedra de origen volcánico, de las mismas colinas en donde se asientan estas edificaciones.
¿Qué le llama la atención al lente del americano que viaja y visita a Edimburgo de los Siete Mares en la Costa Escocesa?
Con dos almas
Periódicos europeos han ratificado que Edimburgo es la capital escocesa que posee dos almas:
Una ciudad medieval y una ciudad nueva con jardines increíblemente hermosos, como los de La Calle de la Princesa.
De hecho, se dice que en la ciudad las distancias son muy cortas, y que el castillo, así como la catedral, son los monumentos muy llamativos al turista.
La ciudad vieja
Ha preservado una estructura medieval, con edificios de la reforma protestante católica.
Allí se encuentra su catedral y muchos museos, como el Museo Real de Escocia; y también, la Universidad de Edimburgo.
En el llamado pueblo viejo, su población ha bajado notablemente, hasta ser apenas de unos 20,000 habitantes, aproximadamente, en el día de hoy.
Literatos y tumbas…
Visitar Edimburgo no es muy frecuente en los turistas americanos, al menos los latinos; sin embargo, el ambiente y sus planes turísticos, te permitirán vivir momentos inolvidables.
Es que, Edimburgo es considerada la ciudad de la literatura, la ciudad de los festivales; y los museos y galerías de arte abundan en todas partes.
Allí, es posible que te sientas viviendo parte de las famosas novelas de Stevenson, y que el cielo oscurecido, las callejuelas y las leyendas como la de El extraño caso del doctor Jekyll y Mr. Hyde, caminen a tu lado como si fueran sombras.

Some friends recently returned from a trip to Edinburgh and they made me so want to visit it one day! Now your post comes with some additional information and scenery I was not familiar with, but still contributes on my desire to see Edinburgh one day.
What happens is that being there will make you want to know everything, to investigate and to understand why it is so well regarded by UNESCO; besides, it is the cradle of good literature as well.

If you're going, fully aware that its just a giant tourist trap, then it's pretty fun and wonderful. The architecture is legit and beautiful around the central kinda stuff.
But it is nothing but a tourist trap nowadays. I feel like its charm has been completely destroyed by it. Going outside of the main areas gets very depressing as all the houses and buildings are impoverished looking, and built with very depressing dark stone and that even more speckled cement style of scotland generally.
Still, if you can ignore that, it's legit a unique town for a day trip or two!

There are buildings that look impoverished and dirty, but many of them are because of the volcanic stone. But the truth is that in general, it absorbs you at the level of history, to be walking through pure medieval sites.
It seems to me that it should be a destination although yes, for a few days, it is true.
