WINDSOR CASTLE • A Budget Tour of the Castle

When you talk about England what is the first thing that would come to mind? For me, I would think about Royalty, knights, armor, medieval, Victorian and most of all castles. It has been said that there are around 4000 castles in England. When I was young I always loves castles in stories and movies. Never in my life had I expected to see one.

This is the first castle we will visit so come with us today as we explore Windsor Castle.

2.jpg

To get to the castle we would need to pass thru the Windsor Royal Shopping Center. Here there are a lot of boutiques and restaurants. This place alone can take up a lot of your time if you would explore every area.

3.jpg

4.jpg

The Shopping center also has a railway station for easy access to commuters. We could have taken the railway but it would take a couple of different transfers to get here.

5.jpg

I noticed that there are a lot of cyclists in this area like a rest stop for them.

6.jpg

We didn't explore much of the shopping center as our main purpose here is to visit the castle. Since this is a tourist site expect a lot of people when you visit.

7.jpg

Souvenir shops are everywhere around the castle. I usually like to check out souvenir shops whenever we visit places. But since we will be staying in London for a long time we have a lot of time to check them out some other day.

8.jpg

On the western part of the castle, you will see the statue of Queen Victoria. A great spot for tourists to visit is outside Windsor Castle, where she stands as the second-longest reigning monarch in British history.

Just near the statue of Queen Victoria is the Henry VIII Gateway. Guarded by security this is a great place to take a photo. Some of the guards will even have your photo taken with them.

15.jpg

16.jpg

This is the area where tourists will enter. As mentioned we are on a budget and cannot enter the castle. So instead we will just be visiting the surrounding areas of the castle.

Visiting the inside of the castle on site will cost:

£30.00 for adults
£19.50 for young adults
£16.50 for children
Free for children below 5

Although advance booking online will cost cheaper.

Around the castle walls, there are a lot of interesting shops and a lot of things to see.

18.jpg

19.jpg

Just beside the gift shop is the former residence of Charles Knight. A famous author and publisher. I am not familiar with his works but he seems to be popular.

20.jpg

Exploring more of the surrounding areas, your attention from the castle will be drawn away for a while. So many shops and restaurants were built in the old buildings. I love the way how they keep the old structures and just make them work for their business. It keeps that old charm, history and culture.

Back to our attention to the castle from the western side. Here we would see The Curfew Tower. As a result of the bell at the top of the tower, which was tolling nightly curfews, the names Curfew Tower and Fire Bell Gate were derived from this. This bell tolled until the end of the Victorian period, and ceased in 1900, which was the last night the tower tolled.

32.jpg

From here we walked towards the northern part of the castle to get a view from this side. Who knows what else we will discover in this area?

33.jpg

34.jpg

35.jpg

This area is no longer part of the castle but it still looks very medieval. But I am not sure if it is still somehow connected to the main castle as it is very secured.

Located at the intersection of Thames Street and Datchet Road, the King George V Memorial can be found.

42.jpg

43.jpg

Headed towards the southern part of the castle we came across this old lovely home. All the apartments look new in this area except for this one. Probably the owner wouldn't sell no matter what and what makes the house stand out from the rest.

44.jpg

Pubs can be found all over London and we haven't been to any of them yet. I was told that pubs are just not for drinking but also they serve good food. This one is very close to Cambridge Gate and The Long Walk Road.

45.jpg

46.1.jpg

Here we are at the Cambridge Gate where you could see the grand entrance to Windsor Castle. I think this place is the most photographed by tourists as people always went straight here when they arrived.

For over 900 years, Windsor Castle has been a royal residence and fortress, and it remains a working palace even today. It is known to be the oldest inhabited working castle in the world.

Our visit would not be complete without a quick shoot with my wife. Couldn't get a good spot near the gate but this would do.

51.jpg

A horse-drawn carriage from March to December in which you could hire to give you a ride across the Long Walk Road.

53.jpg

54.jpg

Stretching at 2.5 miles from Windsor Castle, The Long Walk Road is indeed very long. Lined up with Elm trees makes this road a beautiful sight to behold. The road passes thru the Deer Park where you could see deer in their natural habitat.

We did not walk the Long Road as it would be too long for us. Maybe next time we could try and see King George III & His Horse Statue at the end of the road.

55.jpg

56.jpg

Just a few more shots for my wife before we leave the area.

57.jpg

58.jpg

59.jpg

Time to leave and even though we didn't see the inside of the castle. Outside the walls has still so much to offer and see. Even if you are on a tight budget you can still make your visit to Windsor Castle very interesting and worthwhile.

"It has been said that there are around 4000 castles in England."

Oh, my! So many, I had no idea! 😮 I do hope your budget will increase so you can see inside some of them! I can't believe how much shopping there is right beside Windsor castle, I am amazed!

Hey @thekittygirl we need to save up to see the good stuff inside because here you would always need to pay 😄. The shopping centers here are very different from the Philippines. Here it feels more nostalgic I think.
