This past Friday, May 3, I went to the town of El Consejo, in Aragua state (Venezuela), to climb the hill of La Cruz (The Cross), a place I didn't know, so I was very excited about this adventure.
Este viernes que pasó, 3 de mayo, me fui para el pueblo de El Consejo, en el estado Aragua (Venezuela), para subir el cerro de La Cruz, un lugar que no conocía, así que estaba muy emocionada por esta aventura.
That day dawned with an altered atmosphere, there was a dense haze and everything looked super opaque. According to what I saw on the news, it was a mixture of dust from the Sahara and smoke from the forest fires that have occurred in various parts of the country.
Ese día amaneció con la atmósfera alterada, había una densa calima y todo se veía súper opaco. Según vi en las noticias, era una mezcla de polvo del Sahara y el humo de los incendios forestales que han ocurrido en varias partes del país.
The hike to the mountain was in the afternoon, I thought the haze would go away, but it didn't, anyway I wasn't going to stop going because of that. The meeting point: Bolivar Square in El Consejo, in front of the church, at 4:00 pm.
La caminata a la montaña era en la tarde, pensé que la calima se iría, pero no fue así, de todos modos no iba a dejar de ir por eso. El punto de reunión: la Plaza Bolívar de El Consejo, frente a la iglesia, a las 4:00 pm.
I arrived half an hour early and there was no one there, I didn't worry because people usually show up right on time or a little later, while waiting I walked around the square. The plaque says that the statue of Simon Bolivar was placed there in 1930, on the centenary of his death.
Llegué media hora antes y no había nadie, no me preocupé porque la gente suele aparecer justo a la hora o un poco después, mientras esperaba di una vuelta por la plaza. La placa dice que la estatua de Simón Bolívar fue colocada allí en 1930, en el centenario de su muerte.
Just at 4:00 some people arrived and I asked them if they were going to the hill too, they said yes and as I didn't see anyone from the group I was going to climb with, I decided to go with them, besides they were from the village and knew the way. The route starts going up behind the church.
Justo a las 4:00 llegaron unas personas y les pregunté si iban al cerro también, me dijeron que sí y como no veía a nadie del grupo con el que yo iba a subir, decidí irme con ellos, además eran del pueblo y conocían el camino. La ruta comienza subiendo detrás de la iglesia.
At the beginning we pass through the streets and alleys of the neighborhood that is located at the base of the mountain and further up.
Al principio pasamos por calles y callejones del barrio que está asentado en la base de la montaña y más arriba.
We met many people along the way, children, young people and adults, I learned that the reason for climbing the hill on this day is a tradition of the village for the celebration of the Cross of May, a date on which people thank nature because this month the food crops begin to be harvested.
Nos encontramos a muchas personas en el camino, niños, jóvenes y adultos, supe que el motivo de subir el cerro este día es una tradición del pueblo por la celebración de La Cruz de Mayo, una fecha en la que se agradece a la naturaleza porque este mes se inician las cosechas de los alimentos.
When the cement stairs disappear and the dirt trail begins, comes the good stuff 😄, this hill has a certain level of difficulty, both because of how steep it is and the type of terrain, with small stones that slide when you step on them, so you can't get distracted.
Cuando desaparecen las escaleras de cemento y comienza el sendero de tierra, viene lo bueno 😄, este cerro tiene cierto nivel de dificultad, tanto por lo empinado que es como por el tipo de terreno, con pequeñas piedras que se deslizan al pisar, así que no te puedes distraer.
But it's easy to get distracted, looking back the views were great despite the haze. One mistake I made was not carrying my bamboo stick, it is very helpful the pole on this kind of mountain, I don't know why I left it, well, the positive thing is that my thighs got more exercise 😅.
Pero es fácil distraerse, al mirar atrás las vistas estaban muy buenas a pesar de la calima. Un error que cometí fue no haber llevado mi palo de bambú, es de mucha ayuda el bastón en este tipo de montaña, no sé por qué lo dejé, bueno, lo positivo es que mis muslos se ejercitaron más 😅.
I was talking to a man as I was going up and I asked him about the hill, he told me that the people of the town have always climbed it but he didn't know much about the history of the crosses, although he did remember that there were more than one. The one you see in the photo below, made of cement, is one of the old ones, he told me, and is the only one left of that style.
Iba hablando con un señor mientras subía y le pregunté sobre el cerro, me dijo que la gente del pueblo siempre lo ha subido pero no sabía mucho de la historia de las cruces, aunque sí recordaba que había más de una. La que ven en la foto que sigue, hecha de cemento, es de las viejas me dijo, y es la única que queda de ese estilo.
Then I did some research on the Internet and found that the cross was originally placed there by Father Jaques Clermont and a group of people from the village on May 3, 1955. They made a pilgrimage to the top, a mass, and from that moment on it became a tradition to climb it on that date every year. They also put lighting on the cross and over the years it became a symbol of El Consejo.
Luego investigué un poco en Internet y encontré que originalmente la cruz fue colocada allí por el padre Jaques Clermont y un grupo de personas del pueblo el 3 de mayo de 1955. Hicieron una peregrinación hasta la cima, una misa, y desde ese momento se volvió una tradición subirlo en esa fecha cada año. Además le pusieron iluminación a la cruz y con los años se convirtió en un símbolo de El Consejo.
When I had been climbing for about 15 minutes, I reached a flat spot, and I was told that sometimes children come here to fly kites.
Cuando llevaba unos 15 minutos subiendo, llegué a una parte plana, me dijeron que a veces vienen los niños acá a volar papagayo (cometa).
It wasn't much longer to reach the cross, although there was no sun, I was super heated and sweaty because of the steepness of this hill.
Ya no faltaba mucho para alcanzar la cruz, aunque no había sol, estaba súper acalorada y sudada por lo empinado de este cerro.
When I arrived I saw that the cross is made of metal and has built-in lights. It used to be made of wood, I was told, but years ago they changed it because it had deteriorated.
Al llegar vi que la cruz es de metal y tiene incorporadas unas luces. Antes era de madera, me dijeron, pero hace años la cambiaron porque se había deteriorado.
A few meters from the cross they have also placed some flags, the flags of Venezuela, Aragua state and the municipality.
A unos cuantos metros de la cruz han colocado también unas banderas, la de Venezuela, del estado Aragua y del municipio.
When I looked at the clock it was only 4:23 pm, so it took me just over 20 minutes to get to the top, but although it is a short route, it is intense.
Cuando vi el reloj eran apenas las 4:23 pm, o sea que me tomó poco más de 20 minutos llegar a la cima, pero aunque es una ruta corta, es intensa.
I stayed there looking at the landscape and then I started talking to a man and his daughter, I asked them if they knew what was beyond, and as they were from El Consejo and knew these mountains, they told me that you could continue and go down to the village on the other side. There is also the possibility of reaching other places on longer routes.
Me quedé viendo el paisaje y luego me puse a hablar con un señor y su hija, les pregunté si sabían qué había más allá, y como eran de El Consejo y conocían estas montañas, me dijeron que se podía seguir y bajar al pueblo por otro lado. También hay posibilidad de llegar a otros lugares en rutas más largas.
More and more people were arriving at the summit, some with their pets, never missing a hiking dog 😊.
Cada vez iba llegando más gente a la cima, algunos con sus mascotas, nunca falta un perro senderista 😊.
The man I was talking to told me that years ago there were goats here, belonging to a lady who used to let them loose to eat around here.
El señor con el que estaba hablando, me dijo que hace años aquí había cabras, de una señora que las soltaba para que comieran por ahí.
Then I went down with him and his daughter and we ran into three goats, sure they are the descendants, I told him 😄.
Luego bajé con él y su hija y nos topamos con tres cabras, seguro son los descendientes, le dije 😄.
The descent was not so easy, I even fell, but fortunately nothing happened to me. I almost always fall when I go on a new route 😆.
El descenso no estuvo tan fácil, incluso me caí, pero afortunadamente no me pasó nada. Casi siempre me caigo cuando voy a una ruta nueva 😆.
The man and his daughter were my guides on the way down, if I had gone down alone it might have taken me longer because there are several paths, when I went up I did it by another way.
El señor y su hija fueron mis guías al bajar, si hubiese bajado sola quizás me habría tardado más porque hay varios caminos, cuando subí lo hice por otra parte.
Talking with them, I told them that when I was in high school I had a friend who lived in El Consejo, they asked me her name, in case they knew her since it is a small town, and guess what, it turns out that the man was her father, what a surprise we all got! Truly, as they say, the world is small...
Hablando con ellos, les comenté que cuando estaba en bachillerato tenía una amiga que vivía en El Consejo, me preguntaron su nombre, por si la conocían ya que es un pueblo pequeño, y adivinen, resulta ser que el señor era su papá, ¡qué sorpresa nos llevamos todos! En verdad, como dicen, el mundo es un pañuelo...
When we got to town I thanked them for their company on the way down and told them to say hello to my friend, who I haven't seen in years. And that was the end of this experience on La Cruz hill in El Consejo, I loved climbing it, I hope you liked it, until the next adventure!

Siempre voy a admirar lo aventurera que eres, no me atrevería ir a un lugar nuevo sola para conocerlo de noche.
Esa cruz es bien bonita y tecnológica, con luces y todo. No sabía de ese pueblo y su tradición. Qué casualidad que subieras o bajaras con el papa de tu amiga, seguro que ella también se llevó una gran sorpresa.
La nostalgia que siento es porque tengo 3 años diciendo que subiría a la cruz de donde vivo que la decoran para el 3 de mayo, nunca he subido y he pasado casi toda mi vida aquí, me había prometido hacerlo este año, pero tengo un problema en las rodillas, me hice una tomografía porque el dolor ya es diario y resulto que debo hacer muchos meses de terapia. Eso me tiene triste porque descubrí el senderismo y la felicidad que me causan hace poco.
En fin, me alegra subir a esa cruz contigo 🤭😆🥰

Wow, what a climb! Too bad the visibility was so poor that day, I´m sure the top of the hill offers some spectacular views on bright sunny days :) How come your superhero sister was not with you on that hike?

Cómo va a ser el papá de tu amigaaaaa! Jajaja demasiada casualidad, es que los pueblos son una cosa increíble, seguro hubo una vibra ahí familiar que les hizo sentir cercanos.
Leer Sahara y pensar lo lejos que está es bastante curioso, uno creería que esas corrientes se pierden en el océano. Y luego, lo que le viene a la cabeza a mi con el consejo es ron xD.
Pero y la gente con la que ibas nunca apareció? Me parece un poco raro subir r tan tarde de excursión no? Pero me imagino que sería por lo cortito.
Siií chama, demasiado loco jajajaja, pasé un momento agradable con ellos. De la gente con la que iba sólo me encontré a algunos cuando iba bajando, me atreví a subir sin ellos porque no quería que se me hiciera tarde, no sabía qué tan larga era. La suben a esa hora porque esa es la tradición, según me contaron.
¿Viste? Me imagino que en Europa el polvo anda activo también...
