Parenting is a difficult terrain that cannot be conclusive with a curriculum or brochure; hence, different styles may relate to how the home is built or the children behave. The presence of mothers in a house makes the latter a home, one that the occupants will always feel welcomed in. Is there really a right way to parent? Not necessarily; some events require instantaneous and spontaneous approaches, while others are similar to experiences shared by others.
A home should be made by both parents—mother and father. Notwithstanding, there are homes with single parents that still do well, but this is often with more hard work.

No, it does not start with conception, pregnancy, and delivery. Some women become mothers even without giving birth. Adoption yeah? Or forced parenting by actual parents. And we have seen some mothers who are careless about their children and may not necessarily be referred to as mothers. The journey to motherhood begins with being responsible for the little ones. Some older sisters have lived like mothers to the younger ones. Debatable thus, let's limit our focus to the biological processes of motherhood.
While abortions are legal in some countries, they are illegal in Nigeria. Yet, there are a significant number of married couples that are struggling with conception despite running necessary investigations and being diagnosed to be within normal limits. Some conceptions come spontaneously, while others have to wait for months or even years. Other times, we have women who undergo assisted reproductive technology (ART) before achieving conception. I'm certain now that you agree with me that the journey to motherhood can be a Herculean task.
No pregnancy is the same. While the primigravidas have their peculiarities, the multigravidas cannot be taken with levity. Generally, women experience a lot of changes, mostly from hormonal disruption; these changes can include excessive vomiting or changes in appetite. The woman bears another human being in the form of a fetus within her, and even when she delivers, she continues the burden of care and love.
Have you had a toothache? I have had several toothaches and removed a few. Don't ask me how many teeth I have left. Labor pains are sometimes described as toothaches. Women feel like they're being torn apart. I worked in the labor room as a doctor for a period of time, and I have heard wails and tears. Many women promise themselves they will not get pregnant again after the index pregnancy. But hey, women undergo abandonment sometimes, especially in hospitals here in Nigeria, where nurses are overworked and patients would not enjoy the privilege of a readily available midwife. But hey, once they're delivered, a few escape stitching, while a significant number bear the pains of episioraphy. But not all pregnancies are delivered vaginally with the hidden scar of stitches. Some stitches are abdominal and obvious as a result of abdominal caesarean sections. Lastly, pregnancy is a journey where some women do not return as a result of mortality. It is painful, but we hope the rate of mortality will decline significantly.
As simple as this looks, mothers are often overwhelmed with taking care of the newborn and themselves. Lucky for us in Africa and Nigeria, mothers have their mother-in-laws come around to take care of them during the early days after delivery. I have had to treat a few early stage mothers with postpartum hypertension and headaches. The newborns are mostly crying or eating, and mothers only rest when these babies sleep.
Mothers need support at every stage of motherhood. Our presence as support should correlate with things that give them joy, like surprise meals and credit alerts. On this day of Mother's Day, I wish my sweet mom a happy Mother's Day and thank her for too many efforts to mention over us the kids.
