In Web3 your domain has value.

You have probably read or heard about .crypto or .nft domains and wondered whether they have anything to do with cryptocurrencies. Well, in fact my dear reader, today in the spectrum of the web3 domains are much more than just a simple web address, they are the starting point of what is called "the internet of value".

With the implementation of Web3, domains are decentralised, which means that it is not only possible to create a website, you can now also connect as many crypto wallet addresses as you own, even if they belong to different networks.

Domains are the main gateway to the world of digital marketing, since through this your audience accesses your business or activity that generates income, at the same time is presented as a keyword positionable in search engines, so choose wisely.

Do you know what a decentralised domain is?

In the centralised world, extensions such as .com or .net, among others, are well known. Under this scheme all domains are under the control of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. To acquire a domain name it is necessary to buy it through companies that offer this type of service, such as GoDaddy or Bluehost, at the same time the content of your website is hosted on servers under the control of these corporations.

Under Web3, blockchain technology is the backbone of the domain system, which serves not only to store values but also the content you generate will not remain static on a server, thus making it impossible to remove or censor what you share with the world.

The importance of blockchain domains is manifested in the possibility of dispensing with third parties to take full control of your website, without the surveillance of a centralised authority such as ICANN.

Is it possible to invest in blockchain domains?

Recently, a domain called sex.eth was sold for 230 ETH ($90,000 at the time), which started a speculative movement in the world of decentralised domains. Speculative movements are part of this Web3 proposition as the vast majority of domains are bought and then sold at prices over the moon. Evidently, for most users, decentralised domains represent more of a business opportunity than a space to present content.

Where to buy a decentralised domain?
  • Unstoppable domains:
Undoubtedly the most popular DAPP for decentralised domains,
The main reason for its supremacy lies in the fact that .crypto, .btc, blockchain or .zil domains can be purchased without having to commit to annual subscriptions. It should be noted that the domains are NFT domains that you buy once and automatically host in your cryptocurrency wallet. Depending on the name and extension on Unstoppable domains a domain can be worth between $40 and $10.

  • Ethereum Name Services (ENS):
designed for Ethereum lovers by this way they will be able to buy exclusive .eth domains, applicable for wallets of Vitálik Buterin's network. The only criticism I can infer about .eth domains is the fact that they require a subscription, i.e. the buyer is not the owner of his own domain for life. Even so, ENS has a good reputation among its subscribers.

  • PeerName:
This dApp has been working since 2014, making it one of the oldest on the market, it also offers a variety of extensions such as .bit, .coin, .neo among many, it is only necessary to review each domain to verify its operational network or if possible its use to apply it in multiple directions of cryptocurrencies.

I am sure that in the coming years this type of decentralized domain services will increase in popularity; especially as web3 gains a foothold among internet users around the world. Time will tell if decentralized options will overtake the hegemony of traditional Web2 domains.

Which domain extension would you recommend to an average person?

The .crypto ?

I'm not sure which one I like.

Thank you for your comment and for your accurate observation on certain details that I left out of my post. Regarding your question, .crypto domains are usually the most demanded given their versatility to safeguard multiple cryptocurrencies, however clearly these domains are usually created for speculative purposes.

I like the look of .crypto and also .x for their simplicity.

Although .x are more expensive.

Thanks for sharing :)

All domain names have value. It is nice that the blockchain domains have gotten rid of the exorbitant renewal fees making such names more valuable for the holders.
