Face to face with death.

in The Ink Well15 days ago (edited)

There is never a boring moment with dad. As a military man who has served the army for 33 years and will be retiring soon, he always has a story to tell and an experience to share. Sometimes I love to eavesdrop whenever he is sharing some of his experience with visitors. Some of his stories are like things we see in movies, but they are all real-life stories, and every day you hear him say, "If not for God, I strongly doubt if I'd still be alive." In many of his stories, he has been face to face with a thing or two that should have hurt him, but he always manages to come out strong.

We all do enjoy his stories, but he does not tell us all as kids. Sometimes we want to eavesdrop on what he shares with others but are always caught and asked to leave. Sometimes I try to imagine having to experience what we see in movies and what it would feel like. He told us about a time they deployed to Liberia. As always at night, they took turns for sentry at their small outpost and since he is not someone who sleeps early, his turn was always from midnight to the early hours of the day. He did a handing and taking over at around 3 a.m and went to bed at around 4 a.m.

At the same time he went to sleep, the rebels came to attack, and the guy on sentry ran away without calling the others. They only realized they were under attack when the rebels were close enough. He wanted to run out through the window, so he stepped on another soldier's bootlace and fell back into the room. The other guy managed to escape, but with how close they were, he could not attempt to jump out again. He was surrounded all around, and both he and them could see each other through the glass window.

"Let's go in, beat him up, and take his valuables." One said to the other

"No, wait for Oga (the boss) to come, and he will tell us what to do with him; you know it is only Oga that gives the order around here." The other responded.

"God, please come to my rescue." They were the only words that kept coming out of my dad's mouth.

He said they were there for almost 2 hours; the boss did not show up, and they too did not bother to break the door or window.

"Soldiers are here. Soldiers are here. Everybody retreat." He kept hearing a voice from afar that kept shouting these words, and it gave him hope.

After some time, everywhere went silent, and he could not see or hear anything, which means they did retreat, but for safety purposes, he still stood still, waiting for whoever or whatever came through the door or any of the windows.

"Offia, oh Offia, if anything happens to you, I will never forgive myself because you fell back into the room because of me." The other soldier that he was supposed to run with kept lamenting.

"Samuel," my dad called out for the other soldier, and the soldier ran into the room and hugged him.

"Offia, it is either you are a JuJu man or your father is a JuJu man (JuJu means voodoo)". Samuel and everyone kept saying

This is just one of the many dangers he has escaped by the skin of his teeth.

Awwn... Dad was a military man😍
Oh yes am awwning, before i read the other paragraphs. All i can say is I give all to your mom. Not sure i would be able to have a military man as a husband, oh nooo... Not with all these heart attack here and there😩

😂😂
For real the heart attacks come as a package of its own once you say yes, but with time you will get used to it. So don't run because of the heart attack.

Getting used to always seeing death is indeed a something🙂

Nice stories to tell.

Thanks

Welcome. ☺️

I can only imagine what would have been going through his mind at that point in time. Luckily, he was able to escape without getting hurt.

At that point you can even feel like your hea is spinning 😂 but thank God for life.

Soldiers are great heroes. Thank God for the protection.
Are you thinking of joining him in the service?

Not thinking of joining, I doubt if my dad would let me even if I wanted to.

What a scary ordeal for your father to endure! It takes a certain kind of character to be in the military. I would have loved to have seen more of that character shine through in this piece.

Your story and characters needed more development, and more show than tell to bring them both to life. You will find that it is rather challenging to bring a complete story to your reader in a piece of this length. What we need as a reader is to feel how your father felt - being trapped in that room wondering what fate lay ahead of him. As a writer, you need to use the five senses to immerse your reader into your setting and character's emotions. Give your reader a vested interest in the outcome. You did have some nice dialogue! Take a look at the links in this article to see how you could apply the lessons in these articles to your work to elevate it to the next level.

Thank you for writing in The Ink Well.

Corrections taken, thanks ink well community.

Eiiii. Thank God your dad was safe. Even though I claim to be a strong woman, I can't imagine what being a wife to a soldier feels like because of stories like this. Lol.
